You sure can if that's what you want to do.  I don't do that because if they are in different boxes I'm hoping to keep any diseases that may crop up from spreading to ALL of my tomato plants.

But my neighbor grows gobs of them in her 3 x 4 ft area.  Granted, they are all volunteers from her compost that she allows to continue to grow, but they sure are crowded every year.  I wouldn't have thought it would work,  but it does.

Good question.  Maybe we'll hear from someone who has done it.

My take is Yes.  I have a 2' x 7' bed for 7 staggered tomatoes that I will under-plant with a few smaller veggies here and there.  I also have a bucket brigade of 9 tall tomatoes in 5-gallon buckets.  There will be a couple more in other areas of the yard as insurance.

Are they going to be well pruned and trained tall/indeterminate tomatoes?  Or wider, bushier determinates?  Or a mix? They are heavy feeders and drinkers so be prepared to meet their needs.  If a disease gets to the plants, it could spread and you could lose the whole lot.  Of course, that unfortunately can happen even if the tomatoes are scattered around the yard. Embarassed

Going back to your question, Yes.  And may you have a bumper crop for canning.  Looking forward to others commenting as I keep on learning from all the members.

Added: I see that CC has already replied.

I do. No problem. Except I plant a tomato plant in every other square,  in a checkerboard pattern.

Yep. You will have to be diligent on pruning and string and ties to keep them vertical! But yes. It will be a tomato jungle out there! Smile
