Warning! New 'Grow Well' Mel's mix is not good!

Post  sgeades on 5/10/2010, 5:56 pm

Hi all,

On another post I'd written about how all my plants have died or are severely suffering that I started from seed with the store bought "Grow Well" Mels mix. I restarted some seeds using a different mix and the plants are thriving.

I decided to mix my own Mel's mix using Mel's formula (peat moss, coarse vermiculite, and 5 ingrediant compost). The finished product looked so much different than the purchase stuff. Now after comparing the two I can see that the Grow Well stuff either didn't use coarse vermiculite but maybe fine or medium OR they didn't put enough in. My bet is the former.

I took the Mel's mix back to the local IFA where I got from in March and got a refund. Mel or someone really familiar with the mix needs to check this out before some one else has a garden that fails.

Pass this along!!!

I'm so sad to hear of the problems you're having with the store-bought Mel's Mix! I sure hope it was just one bad batch, and that there won't be across-the-board issues with the mix!

If you haven't yet, please get in touch with the SFG Foundation - please call the Toll free number 1-877-828-1188 and let them know about the problem. (It will probably get the info to the right people a lot faster than this post.)

I'm sending 'happy plants' vibes to your garden!

Hi Shelly,

I'm sorry to hear about your disappointing experience with Grow Well. That must have been frustrating, but it's good to know that you're back on schedule with different potting medium.

The only person on the forum in a position to respond to your experience would be Alan from the SFG Foundation. If you recall, he did reply to a similar post from you on Tuesday, March 30. He can be reached at Alan@squarefootgardening.com or at the number Wyld provided in her post above.

By the way, I changed your topic title to lower case as it is considered quite rude to use all caps.
