Hi Folks,

How much new compost do I put into last years Mel's Mix to rejuvenate it?

Thanks
Bart

Mel says a trowel full.  I always end up using enough to bring the square (or box) up to level again.  I've noticed, though, that simply using the trowel to "fluff" each square tends to bring the level up approximately an inch.

I fill the box to the top with fresh compost then turn it under. In my experience, one trowel full of fresh compost simply isn't enough, and the nutrients wl be used up rather quickly by the plants.

I use a 5 gal bucket or 2, depending on how low the MM got over the season.

You need an appropriate trowel.

My two cents:
2- 5 gal buckets per 4'x4' as "rejuvenation" prior to spring plant.
Just did that this weekend Smile

That's just my preference, probably is no specific amount/rule or at least it will vary by personal preference and even specific condition of peoples soils.
My thinking is 2- 5 gal buckets is equivalent to a 1" layer on a 4'x4' bed.  I've heard other recommendations for 1/2"-1" layers recommended.  Also, an original "Mix" includes 4- 5 gallon buckets, so I'm assuming a typical season does not deplete more than 1/2 the total compost.

Anyway, that's what I've been doing, but I will say I may not be able to use that every year because of potential over filling.  So far, after about 3 years, my boxes are generally sitting at full after adding compost, but I do have one that's starting to get overfull, so I may have to adjust my "2 buckets" in the future for a season.
