Flying bugs around compost barrel

Post  Ron Mason on 3/14/2016, 4:09 pm

Got a question about tumbling barrel composter. Just loaded mine for the first time a couple of days before the rains started. Didn't really understand that if you leave the door facing up, the barrel will fill up with water even though the door is closed. So by the time it stoped raining and I went out to check on it', it was half full of water. I drained it all and everything seems to be ok....but now there are many little flies hangin around it. So I guess my question is, do all the little flies indicate a problem with my compost? And if so, do I need to start all over loading it?

Hi, Ron, from Ohio glad you\'re here   I wouldn't get too worried about flies around your compost thingy.  I have a straight up pile, and there are always flies/gnat/whatever around it.  They are just doin' their thing.  However, don't let your compost get underwater, it will go anaerobic and get stinky and bad fast.  Add some Browns to fluff the thing up and get some airspace in there!

And the search bar in the upper left corner brings up tons of great SFG info. And Compost!

Where there's compost, there are little flying things. Probably need some dry browns to help dry everything out.
