Re: Second Year SFG in Canada
I bought these "summer broccoli" seeds to try. They really sound interesting. I'm gointg to plant them next week. (Sanderson: Did I send you some of these?)CapeCoddess wrote:Exciting times, TD! Nice broc. Never got any florets bigger than a nickle on mine and they've bolted already. Guess I'll just grow them for the leaves from now on.

Very true. However, I've got so much growing right now for smoothies and sautéing that I didn't need the broccoli leaves. They are feeding the compost pile instead of me. I've also got a couple more broccoli plants from which to use the leaves. I really should start blanching/freezing especially the kale.
Yikes what am I doing posting at 12:30 am my time? Need to go get some sleep.

Dehydrate the broccoli leaves and stems and make a broccoli powder.

Re: Second Year SFG in Canada
yolos ... thanks for that suggestion.
Here are a couple of aerial photos of the SFG and pond/flower garden.
And some at ground level from the SFG.
Broccoli, cabbage, yellow wax beans, purple bush beans, and eggplant. SFG sure does pack 'em in.
Sugar snap peas and cucumber plants on the trellis.
Sweet 100 cherry tomatoes.
Big beef tomatoes ... no sign of ripening yet.
Roma tomatoes.
Flowers on the purple bean plants.
I think these are Jalapeno peppers.
A tiny green bell pepper just developing.

Re: Second Year SFG in Canada
Well done, great pics, I enjoy seeing that. It inspires me and gives me ideas. Way to go! Keep it up TD. I wish I could get that close to my house. Those pics just make you want to grab a chair, a cold beverage, a radio if the game is on, then sit out there and forget about the rest of the world.
It is a hot one here today, humidity is a bummer. But, the garden will enjoy it!

We have had the pond for about twenty years. All the credit for the flower gardens and path near the pond goes to Mrs TD. I'm just the veggie person.
Thanks country and Rock for your kind remarks.

Re: Second Year SFG in Canada
(NOTE: This is a repeat of a post on the "Just Pulled Garlic" thread. I placed it here as well just for continuity of this "Second Year SFG in Canada" thread.)
I decided to go ahead and pull up the garlic. I got 13 bulbs (plus one from a few days ago). They are not very big. Now don't laugh too hard when you see where I hung them for curing. For years we have had three big wooden painted butterflies above the back door of our garage and under a roof that goes out over part of the patio. They are somewhat dated but I have been too lazy to take them down. I knew they would be useful for something someday.

TD, your SFG, yard and gardens are picture perfect and look very productive! Mrs. TD must be filling the house with some beautiful flower arrangements.
Personally, i think those butterfly plaques are adorable and make great hangars, but I've always been a bit of a flower child.

I've got two big Basil plants (one in the TT and the other in a ground level SFG). I'm going to try making a batch of Basil Pesto. Never done it before but I do like trying new "experiments". If I have a big enough batch I'll freeze some in ice cube trays for future use. The Vitamix blender stands at the ready.

Re: Second Year SFG in Canada
Our basil plant is huge and beautiful. It started shading the chives, so last time Hubby asked for a few leaves, I cut him a whole branch. He took what he wanted and stuck the rest in a glass of water. When it was still alive and thriving the next day, I put it in a vase and made an arrangement out of it. That was almost a week ago. It's still gorgeous and he picks leaves off it as needed for cooking. Who'd a thunk it?trolleydriver wrote:I've got two big Basil plants (one in the TT and the other in a ground level SFG). Mrs TD's Calendula arrangement from flowers grown in a corner square of one of the SFG boxs.
An out of focus photo of this morning's very small harvest of cherry tomatoes and a single cucumber.

As always your garden is to drool over.
Let us know how the pricked 2 liter bottles for long slow watering while gone work out. I have heard of this plan in various manifestations but not known anyone to actually try it.

You know, I really don't... I've got herbal medicine books here that I go by.
If you do a google search, you'll come up w/ all sorts of stuff. Including this link to the Univ of Maryland Med Ctr:

Just brought mine in today. They are the ones that turn green when you cook them.trolleydriver wrote:Brought in the first of the purple beans. Never grown them before.
Re: Second Year SFG in Canada
Two things I will NOT grow in the SFG boxes next year:
1. Swede Turnip (Rutabaga) ... Huge tops and very ugly roots. For me these plants wasted space, produced poor edible roots and their big leaves flopped into adjacent squares.
2. Calendula (flowers) ... They grow too high and flop over into adjacent squares. They are quite nice so I would grow them in another part of the garden. I prefer to grow dwarf marigolds in the SFG.

Re: Second Year SFG in Canada
TD, I have to say I agree with you on calendula - it wasn't a one-square plant for me either, and the bees didn't even really seem to like the variety I grew. On top of that, though I tried deadheading it, I'm a lazy gardener, so I have been pulling a multitiude of calendula seedlings weedlings out of that bed this year. This year I'm trying Mexican tarragon. It's in the marigold family with a scientific name of Tagetes lucida. It's a smaller plant and I'm happier with it in the SFG than I was with the calendula. I haven't tried it as an herb yet. I planted one per square, next year I'll try four. I'm taking a break from the calendula this year. Next year I'll find that 'another part of the garden' - or one of the landscape beds -for them to grow in.
I love my rutabegas! But, yeah, they don't really stick to their square either. The tops are edible, but if your roots aren't edible they aren't worth growing for the leaves. Silver lining is that your plan next year will have more room for one of your favs?

Harvested a few yellow wax beans and a few more purple beans.
Banana pepper looking good.
Experimental small water bottle waterer in the TT. I will use large bottles when we go away.
Experimental wine bottle waterer (barely visible in the middle of the photo.
