Using hay? Not straw? Tons of seeds and wayyyy more expensive, at least around here. I would never mulch with hay.

Re: Deep Mulch Vermigardening
I have in ground beds I do this with. I am stuck with hay rather than straw or sudan grass (another feed I like to use as doesn't have seed) as it is free. We have a family that raises cattle on part of our land and we harvest cow manure and also the hay after the cattle have eaten their fill and have left mostly just the straw and their nitrogenous "gifts" deposited in and around it, LOL! When using it as mulch I keep the fresh manure to a minimum and only put it on beds where the fruits of my labor will be cooked in case of any bacteria etc.
I have put it under trees as mulch and as fertilizer. I have even planted potatoes, sweet potatoes and squash with this as a cover. I swear by it. It works very well and those plants are incredibly healthy. I do get hay sprouts at the beginning but we've taken to letting them grow to about a foot then pulling them up and tossing them on top to make more mulch. It's really easy to pull them up as the soil is loose and they come up easily.

Interesting, AJR! I just never would have done that had I not seen that or heard your experience. I would use it too if it were free! Sometimes you can get straw or hay real cheap if it isn't suited for animals; read, molded, etc. but otherwise, hay is pretty pricey here. Especially this year, all the rain has really pushed back hay cutting, nobody can get in the fields.

Re: Deep Mulch Vermigardening
Not being a farmer, this may be incorrect as to what I thought I saw. On our way to and from the coast, there was a huge ??combine?? in a mega field. It looked to me that the wheat heads had already been cut and collected and that the combine (??) was cutting the stalks and making straw bales from the remainder stalks. The reason I think this was the correct interpretation is that with a crop like alfalfa, they cut it down and leave it to dry before collecting and baling. The field was so big that the guy was working both days.
SR, How will all the rain affect the harvesting? Is it narrowing the window for proper drying and harvesting?
