Hello from Kent, UK

Post  Courtney on 7/15/2015, 10:50 am

Hi all,

Really glad to have found this forum.

I stumbled across Mel's book in the late 80's, and being a scientist, I was quite enchanted with the idea of SFG. Unfortunately, my lifestyle did not lend itself to having a garden and it is only within the last few months that I have the space to give it a go.

My partner and I have bought the updated books, sourced and ordered the soil mix ingredients, and built 2 boxes. Eventually we will add more, but holding off as we will be moving soon, boxes and all. Smile

I know it's an odd time of year to start, but hopefully we can get a few things grown before winter.

We are currently living in Kent, UK but I am originally from Pittsburgh, and also lived in southern California for 20 years. I grew up surrounded by plants and people with very green thumbs, so I hope that some of it rubbed off on me. We eat a primarily plant based diet so the goal is to grow as much of our own food as is feasible for this climate.

Looking forward to reading your stories and getting to know everyone.

Courtney Smile

Courtney, Welcome to the Forum from central California! glad you\'re here There are some crops that like the fall so I am sure there is something you can plant. Plantoid, Wales, should be along soon. Post photos, please, we love them, the good, the bad and the ugly. Laughing

Welcome Courtney!

If you're moving soon, you may want some plants that produce quickly in your area. I don't know if it's the best season for it in your area, but things like baby bok choy cabbages, radishes, and lettuces and mini-lettuces come to mind immediately.

Do you folks living in Britain have the equivalent of what we have here in the U.S. ... agricultural extension scientists available at universities to consult with, or master gardener associations? Either should be able to tell you, with real specificity and for free, what grows best in your region at this time. If ... you have those.

Even if nothing strikes your fancy as something to plant right now, you could also just get some seedlings growing indoors, ready for transplant later, after you move.

Welcome, Courtney, from Ohio! My dad's family hailed from New Bethlehem PA! Are you staying in the same general locale when you relocate? YOu will find a ton of helpful, knowledgeable people here, it has been a great resource for me. Like you, I did the original SFG back in the late 80s early 90s, with great success. Moved and left my (then they were in the ground) boxes behind.

Now I am back and loving it! You will too! How much growing season do you have left before frost?

Hi Courtney,

So nice to have you join our community.  I really enjoy my time here and I get happiness from gardening.  My wife and I grew up in California, but we now find our family in the Atlanta area.  We've been here 10 years now... it was quite an adjustment at first!  Realizing that we are surrounded by red clay pretty much crushed my original ideas of gardening.  However, my wife discovered Mel's book... and now I am in the middle of my third year.

Welcome, welcome and enjoy your garden!

Hi Courtney and welcome to this great SFG forum. I am in Ottawa Canada but was born in Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, England many, many years ago. I discovered SFG earlier this year and then found this forum. I am loving square foot gardening. Like you I have started with two boxes.

You can see how I started and follow my progress at

Hello Courtney ,
Welcome to the world of ANSFG.as practiced by Mel Bartholomew .
If you can get hold of " The vegetable expert "  book by D G Hessayan ,you'll find a fantastic  book in alphabetical order of nearly all the crops we can grow in the UK , it gives planting /sowing times  and associated info plus diseases and when to harvest .

I've not found better books  , they are often found in garden centres and also on Amazon ( get the newest edition possible as the book normally gives currrently successful brand names for prepacked seeds & pants etc. ..
