Favorite Lettuce Varieties for Fall? Empty Favorite Lettuce Varieties for Fall?

Post  Scorpio Rising 7/3/2015, 6:05 pm

It has been over 20 years since I have grown a crop of lettuce.  Last I remember, I put in black seeded Simpson, and a mesclun mix that was skunky smelling and tasting.  This would be a fall planting for me here in Ohio, after my other squares...not even sure yet what, are done.

A friend at the garden center said Red Sails is really good...any other input would be great!

Thanks!

Merveille des Quatres Saisons is another good one.

Territorial Seeds has some interesting varieties in its new Fall catalog.

Jericho works well for heat!  Drunken Woman Frizzy Headed is a great novelty to grow, and it tastes good as well.  I also like Deer's Tongue - red or green.

Yes, GG, I have seen Jericho mentioned a lot.  Can you grow that all summer! Do you harvest from the outside, or the whole head?

Marvel of four seasons (around here it's about 3 1/4 seasons!)  But I really enjoy it.  A red tinged lettuce that will grow in cold frame and then all the way through most summers.  Our summer is often over 105 degrees for several stretches and that is too much for just about any lettuce, so I plant new every couple of weeks to get through the worst of the summer heat.

Thanks for this! I'm already giving Marvel a try for summer and would like more variety.

Audrey, I have some Jericho from Renee's Garden Seeds.  Do by any chance have any Marvel of the Seasons?  Regardless, PM your address to me again, and I'll get some Jericho off in the mail to you.

Jericho is quite good.  Mine was imported from Israel.  One thing though... even Jericho has its limits in some places.  If the temps are off the charts hot...  it WILL turn bitter (at least it did for me in the end).   In my area, Jericho only extends the season for green head lettuce... it's not indefinite.  GG, did your Jericho last all season in your area?

I like black seeded Simpson, Lolla Rosa, and am trying a new variety called Scottsdale.  All grow well in my central OH garden.

I love Jericho Romaine lettuce, but in the fall in Ohio, it may not be your best choice.  You won't have the heat needs that require a heat tolerant lettuce.

Since bolting should not be an issue for you living in "Polar Bear" country, I would recommend the more tasty, colder climate lettuces.

Have you ever tried butter lettuces?  We grew them indoors one year, but the best tasting lettuces are grown in the sun, not sunlamps.

If you can find Cardinale or Flame, I like those red leaf varieties a lot.

IMHO, Black-seeded Simpson is the best of the regular leaf lettuces in ease of growing and taste.  I like Royal Oak Leaf as well, but BSS is the best overall.

Nothing beats a home-grown salad with lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, green onions, some Italian herbs, chard, parsley, and arugula.

To make our salad complete, we splurge a little and purchase designer olive oils and balsamic vinegars from a specialty store.  Currently, we are using a very high polyphenol Hojiblanca ollive oil and an aged balsamic vinegar that almost tastes good enough to enjoy as a drink.

Can you grow these all summer?  I do recall. BSS being very good.  I don't think I did a red, but will for sure this Fall.

Thanks for all the ideas!

BSS eventually succumbs to the heat, but loves the winter temps we get (mid 20s are usually our coldest).  I grow it uncovered and have no issues.  Colder areas would need to chime on on the performance there.  The first year I grew it, it grew almost 3 feet tall without bolting.  I just kept picking the outer leaves all winter long.

OK, thanks Razed Bed, I will keep an eye out for the 2 red varieties you mentioned, those should be around without going mail order I think.  And I know BSS is common.  And I have grown a butterhead before, I like their texture, really good on a BLT with a REAL T!!!  And yes, this is Polar Bear country!  Klondike is the local university's mascot, LOL!

Will start looking at seeds again.  Will check the charts for when I should sow my fall plantings, thinking next month early will be good, and on for the lettuces.

By the way, on all of these heirloom lettuces, it's super easy to let go to seed and gather it for continual harvests.  For anyone that hasn't done so, this is what I do.

1.  Let it grow until it has dandelion like flowers with fluff.
2.  Watch until that dries.
3.  Pinch the single flower/seed head at its base and rub between your fingers over a bowl or ziploc bag.  The seeds fall to the bowl and the fluff more often than not stays on my fingers to be tossed away.
4.  Any extra debris that gathers can be blown away with gently puffs or if there is a lot I take it out into my yard in a heavy breeze and pick up hand fulls out of the bowl and slowly let it drop from a foot or so above the bowl.  The seed drops, the chaff blows away.

I bought several seed mixes that I don't like seeds in the mix.  By doing the above I'm making my own custom seed mixes excluding those that didn't appeal to me  Smile

OK. today I went to Kmart, and it was so fun to buy Fall seeds!  I have never ever successfully done Fall plantings.  Maybe one of my first SFG years, I did a fall radish crop, which are better than the spring, IMHO.

So I got Black Seeded Simpson, which I have grown before and really liked; Burpee Mesclun Sweet Salad Mix (we shall see, had a skunky experience with a Mesclun in the way distant past) ; Ruby Crunch; Matchless (heirloom, have grown before, I think it is a butter head; and

Kaleidoscope carrots, found my beloved White Icicle radishes, and got Tokyo Long White heirloom onion to harvest for a green onion....

I love you SFG!  Thanks, Mel!

Yes, those carrots shown on my avatar are Kaleidoscope mix and Dark Knight.  Dark Knight is very interesting; it has a yellow center (still tastes like a carrot though).
