I've since read that they don't get as good a start that way so I just transplant mine about 4" deeper than their last pot.  Gets them started faster for my short season garden.
Your tomatoes are looking good too quiltbea.  You've got me a little worried now...  where did you read that trenching does not provide a good start?  I know it definitely shortens growing season... but is it worth it?

Just finally got mine "planted" (in sub-irrigating containers) this past weekend.  This is how I grow my tomatoes and peppers, but everything else I grow is in square-foot garden beds.  This year, I decided to try Mel's Mix in my patio containers.  Can't wait to see the results...

Windmere.....Check Pg 4 of this thread where I posted info rec'd from the Gardening123 newsletter I rec'd.  It states that planting sideways takes too much energy for them to recover quickly.

Thanks for that reference quiltbea.  I dug around a bit on the internet as well , and there are definitely two schools of thought on this.  I think I might conduct an experiment.  My daughter's tomatoes are planted in her box, and they are not trenched.  Since I have more than one of her tomato varieties, I think I'll trench the remaining ones to see if I can see a difference.

CitizenKate, nice bucket brigade you got there, that is a lot of plants.  What kinds or did I miss that?

Windmere, I am glad you are doing a side by side experiment on this.  I read a bunch once, seemed that trenching had pros and cons a lot depending on soil depth and soil warmth.   My own experiences are pretty vague but go along with what Quiltbea says. Keep us updates please.

Sanderson, I hope it will be only those fruits.....

I had planted mine in wall-o-waters in the greenhouse last week. This week some are starting to peak out the tops, they are growing fast. I need to leave them in the w-o-w s over the weekend, I will be gone and no one will be opening and closing the greenhouse in response to every temperature swing. The forecast is highs of 48 and lows of 40 for the next couple days.

That is so frustrating.  Hope someday we can conjure up a preventative, instead of having to wait until it rears its ugly head and watch it destroy half your yield before the remedy kicks in.

Celebrities are my mainstay - all of the middle row of containers.  A couple of Sweet 100s.  Also trying this year: Oregon Spring, Super Sauce, and Big Mama.  There are a couple of Keystone bell peppers and one Jalopen(i)o in back.

Sanderson, sorry about the BER. I wrote down in my ANSFG book three years ago under tomatoes. When planting tomatoes to prevent BER, sprinkle one to two teaspoons of lime in the trench and plant. Works 90+% of the time.

Thanks John. The BER seems to be slowing down on the newest tomatoes. I did add powdered NF milk and Epsom salts before the rain.

I just counted my tomatoes. 150 - 1 BER = 149!! bounce Probably 75% are paste but hey, they're tomatoes.

I simply crush and add eggshells to my compost.  If there are any problems, I dissolve calcium magnesium and use the solution to water my tomatoes.

I'm putting a handful of powdered milk and about 2 Tablespoons Epsom salt in each of my tomato holes this year.  I'll let you know if it really works.
I know that when you get BER, that the next flush of tomatoes will NOT have BER whatever you do to the plant.  Anyway, that's what I read but like they say, there is lots of misinformation online.

I'm wondering if the first flush having BER, and the next flushes not, is because the soil is warming up to perfection. ??

Here is the row of tomatoes in my non-SFG plot with Marigolds planted on the right side just getting ready to bloom.

And since this is a SFG forum, here is one of my six varieties planted in the SFG.  A BrandyBoy about 5+ feet tall.

Oop, I see a branch sticking out on the upper right side of the picture.  I must go stuff it back inside the cage.

Yolos.....what a difference a few states make in the garden.  Yours are growing so big and lovely and mine just starting.
Tomato Tuesday 2015 - Page 4 05-17-10
My first 8 little tomatoes in the covered bed so I can cover them at nite.  Still rather cold here in Maine in the evenings, in the 40s.  And days are usually in the high 50s and low 60s but today we hit 70.  Nice.  On the other half of the bed are lettuce and greens barely growing.  They'll make room for peppers in a couple weeks.
Tomato Tuesday 2015 - Page 4 05-17-11
As you can see, I still have lots of tomatoes and peppers hardening every day to put in the garden in the next few weeks.

I knew that was a remedy, but didn't know you could just use it as a preventative.  Seems to me I came across some video or article somewhere that said to only use it when you have to.

I've got some lime leftover from last year.  Since my tomatoes and peppers are already planted, I'll go ahead and mix some up and water it in to them, and see what happens.

Mine are not much farther ahead than yours, but I can still feel that excitement you feel when you first get them planted.  I think we're finally done with frosts here in Kansas, finally, but we had a little surprise last week that had me scrambling to throw trash bags over all my containers.  I think we're done, I think we're done, I think we're done...

I give the tomatoes a little bonemeal. They seem to have higher needs especially heirlooms. With that bonemeal, careful even watering, deeper beds that keep a consistent soil temperature, not aggressive pruning, and mulching to support all of that, I no longer (knock on wood) have problems with BER or physiological leaf roll.

Yumm, love Celebrities, CK.  How do you preserve your harvest, with that many plants?

Yolo, your plants are inspiration for us up north.  Lovely.
QB, after your winter it must be such a relief to see them into the ground at last.

Ok, here is my update.

FLOWERS.  Ok buds.  What a Face

Turan.....You're right, after our winter its nice to see spring finally arrive.  I only have toms in the covered bed right now but plan on putting in the rest between now and next week.
The worst damage was to my dwarf peach tree.  The weight of ice and snow snapped the largest branch on one side of my little tree and it looks so forlorn and small without it.  I doubt I'll get many fruits this year, if any.  The stress alone must have been terrible for the little thing.
Tomato Tuesday 2015 - Page 4 05-20-10
Here's 2 each, L to R, of Lizzano and Tiny Tim toms as of this morning.  I close the cover up at nite.
As for having too many tomatoes, it can't be done at my house.  I roast all of mine and freeze them.  They are always ready that way for soups, sauces, chili, and any other tomato dishes needed.  Its amazing the great added flavor they give to any cooked dish.

O, sorry about the peach, QB. Hopefully it will regrow and rebound. My dad tried many times to grow a peach tree, they seem very fragile up north.

I am curious what would be the best way to preserve these large slicing tomatoes. They have a lot of juice to roast out but that is what I do. They would be tasty dried but it would take a very long time.
