We came home a couple years ago with some amaryllis.  We planted them and this spring they are glorious.  Here is the story:

Hi Cappy,

I could not access your link.  Sad

I really like Amaryllis.  I like buying Amaryllis and other forced bulbs from the Big Box stores a the end of the season.  I get  the plants for pennies on the dollar.  I usually leave them in the pot, sans the decorative foil, and let the foliage die off before planting in the ground or in larger pots.  One year I stuck an Amaryllis pot in a corner and forgot about it until the following spring when I was surprised by beautiful blooms.

Next weekend and the following week look  for spent Easter Lily plants.  Look for pots with multiple plants.  Buy a lot and make a deal with the department manager.  A couple of years ago I purchased 8 pots for .25 each and got 4 to 6 bulbs from each pot.  Sweet deal. Very Happy

Elizabeth, I just go to his website (world icon) if his link is not highlighted. The article will probably be the most recent.

After I get thru with my comment, I then hit enter.  After you copy your link, do you click on enter.  When you preview the post, your link should be in brownish red print so you will know if it works.

I got an amaryllis for Christmas, but it's a treated waxed bulb that I can't save. I'm going to try anyway, but now I'm hooked, so if it doesn't live I'm going to get a "real" bulb. The lady who gave it to me didn't know it was doomed. She has a regular one that has been happily blooming in a container for 8 years.

They look beautiful and we wish ya lots of luck.  We too are the recipients of gift amaryllis that we fell in love with and now grow several spots in or yard.  Too lazy to type the story over forgive me but here it is:

Beautiful.

I did the same thing when I was given a gift chrysanthemum. When it finished blooming, I separated the plants, eight of them and they have been in my garden now for several years.  They never have enough time to bloom outside, so I would cut off the long budding flower heads and take them indoors and eventually they bloom for about six weeks. Then I give my friend a bunch of flowers for herself.

Chapter 2: Today we removed the wax covering and planted the bulb in a nice big heavy container. I watered it with B1 (I hope that was the right thing to do). Now we'll just wait and see. I could have removed the seed pods, but Bob wants to try growing some from seed, even if it takes 6 years. That's assuming this poor abused bulb can survive its ordeal. Rolling Eyes

Here's another example of why you can't believe everything you read online. First they told me the bulb would be too damaged to survive. Then they said that if I didn't cut off the old seeds, it wouldn't bloom again. Here's proof of just how wrong "they" can be.

Mine has bloomed twice and is now happily resting in its new pot. The friend who gave it to me says hers stays pretty all summer, then she just puts it away in a dark corner until next spring. She's had hers for 8 years. It's always in bloom for Mother's Day. Cool
