I used cedar 1x6 fence boards, rough & untreated in any way.  I am just starting season 5 and I don't expect to be replacing them anytime soon.  I will easily get 2 more seasons out of them, possibly more, but that completely depends on how well I treat them (read:  not smack them with the lawn mower too many times or accidentally lift the corners up with the shovel when adding compost, etc.)

Regardless of what you use your boards will last longer in your climate.

I am not sure as this constant freezing than thawing takes a toll on my boxes.  I am pushing 5 years now and they will not last more than 2 more seasons.
