Well, many of us in our region are bracing for our first big winter storm of the season. By this time tomorrow I am supposed to be buried under 10-12 inches of snow. The storm is currently hovering over the northern part of Turan's territory! Everyone stay safe and start dreaming of seed catalogs!

Here in Kansas, my meteorologist buddy's are predicting half an inch of snow.  The TV stations are predicting 6"+.  Will be interesting to see how that plays out.  LOL. It will be,very, very cold for a week or so, though, so that's pretty much the end to my fall / winter peas, spinach, and lettuce...since I didn't get new cold frames made.  Should be pretty wild up north though, right?

Should be an interesting few days. Tuesday is supposed to be sunny, but blustery, which in SD with new snowfall usually means Ground Blizzard!

In central Ohio we're having a 30 degree change in day time temps starting tomorrow, brr.
I collected a total of 66 bags of leaves. There were some windy days that blew away precious leaves!  So this was about half of last years haul. Today I planted some garlic and its a long way from finishing that chore. Still composting, still cleaning up beds and closing things down for winter. I would love to plant extra tulips and dafs  into the non sfg areas too.  Maybe I'll be done the end of this month. Wink
Then sit and dream about new catalogs coming in the mail.
Indoors there is 20 pounds of apples from the fruit farm sitting in the cooled garage. Time for the dehydrator to get a work out and also make/preserve applesauce.
In December I should be able to move all 9 worm bins into the new basement farm set up. Then it won't be long till its time to think about checking on seed starting supplies..

I pulled the last 2 pounds of carrots a week ago. There is maybe 5 to 10 pounds of rutabagas to harvest.

Well, I missed my small window to dig my few carrots - and now they are buried under a foot of white. They have now become my experiment for letting carrots go to seed since they are biennials and go to seed their second year. It is currently 14F and it is downhill from here for the next several months. I impatiently await the seed catalogs! Final harvest of the season before the early snow storm hit yesterday.
4 pounds, 12 and 3/8 oz. of rutabagas.
N&C Midwest November 2014 Unname10These are getting boiled then mashed with butter and frozen into serving size portions.  Did the same with a prior harvest a couple weeks ago.  Still tasted fresh when reheated.  One Thanksgiving side dish - almost done.

Since it is now in the 40s and supposed to be warmer tomorrow I am going to try to dig out the last of my carrots; hopefully they will be fine.

Same here!  It is currently a beautiful 41, so as soon as my latest batch of jelly is done, I am going out to dig my carrots.

EDIT:  Just finished digging the carrots - all 13 of the 216 planted.  That's what happens when you let the volunteer Cilantro Forest overrun the box!  13 St. Valery carrots (supposedly 10-12" long) and the biggest is 2".  It is adorable!  It will also probably become a hamster snack, as we are currently hamster-sitting for some friends who are on vacation.
