My eggplant is producing lots of fruit.  Mel's Mix and an Earthbox can lead to great things!

Last year my attempt to raise zucchini was an epic fail.  I did not know that zucchini prefeers to be directly sown.  This zucchini was first planted June 17.   Now, a month later, I can't believe how big it is!

Your eggplant looks beautiful.. How are you keeping the flea beatles from chomping on your leaves.  I have been removing them by hand but when I walked around the garden this morning, there are more than ever.  So frustrating.

Watch out for the squash vine borer (SVB) and squash bugs.  I get SVB every year so I have to use tulle to cover.  This is the first year I had squash bugs and they some how got inside my tulle and I had to do some major removal this morning.  Found the squash bugs on my zucchini and many egg clusters on the leaves (all under the tulle).  None on my summer squash though.

Yolos:  Thank you.  To deal with the flea beetles I used a super dose of neem oil and used care not to spray the flowers.  I also diligently pick off the flea beetles I can see.  I have two failed eggplants that I did not photograph... they suffered miserably...  swiss cheese, etc.  I learned my lesson from those failures.

Sanderson:  Thank you.  Smile

CC:  You gave me a chuckle with that emoticon.  Smile

Marc:  My wife says it reminds her of the plant from Little Shop of Horrors.  Smile

Thanks, Windmere....

 BIG hug

Not lookin' so hot right now...  Got a bunch of mildew on the squash leaves...  Have some milk to spray them down, but haven't had time to get out there.

At least it's getting a good rain today.  First time in weeks!

Milk to spray them?  Is this an environmentally friendly method?  Please do tell!

Something I saw on here - Camp, was it from you?  Milk cut by 50% w/ water, sprayed on both tops & bottoms of leaves.

I'll let you know!

Yesterday, I found one leaf on one zucchini had powdery mildew so I researched on line for a solution.  The recipes were all over the board.  Here are some of them.

1 gal water to 1 tablespoon baking soda

2 quarts water to 1 tablespoon baking soda + 1 tablespoon Vegetable oil

If it is hot, 1 tablespoon baking soda if not hot then 2 tablespoon baking soda per gallon of water

9.5 ph bottled water

1 gallon water to 4 teaspoons baking soda - this is the one I trust the most (Garrett)

1/2 cup milk to 1/2 gallon of water

Baking soda can damage a plant so test it on the plant before using all over the garden.  Use it late in the evening or early morning.

I have one of those zucchini plants but I did not support it correctly and it is all over the ground.  Leaves are huge but have gotten very little fruit off of it. Did hand pollination and that helped a bunch.
I planted two varieties of eggplant. One is Asian, not sure of the other. One did well at first and the other just looked at me. I got one eggplant off the one and the other one just suddenly took off! It is sturdy as a tree and is making eggplant like crazy!  You just never know, but it is SO exciting when something does well.  Good luck to you and your garden, it looks fab!
