What do you use for soil if you are near Temecula? Empty What do you use for soil if you are near Temecula?

I'm having a bad year in my garden pretty much across the board, but it's teaching me a lot.

I started gardening 4 summers ago and I try to learn something new each year. This year is my year to learn about soil.

I started 4 years ago with recycled mushroom soil (got it free in Escondido). I had also put some kind of recycled "tree" soil underneath that and some Mel's mix on top.

For 3 years I didn't add anything other than compost and Mel's mix to that soil, and I had 3 awesome growing years--with a bit of a decline last year. This year I added blood meal, bone meal and Cal Po Mag before planting my summer garden.

For the fall I'd like to find some really good soil and add it instead of Mel's mix. Does anyone have any good sources for soil near Temecula?

I read more about the free mushroom soil and I'm not so sure it's the best organic choice.

Thanks in advance!

Usually, the Mel's Mix is only added at the beginning when you build the boxes. The vermiculte/perlite and peat moss don't go any where, but the 5-way compost needs replenishing every time something is planted. Add enough to bring it back up to the original level. There's nothing wrong with mushroom compost but it's only one kind. You could use 4 other kinds to make it well rounded. If you can't make your own compost where you can control the ingredients, then you will have to search harder for the 4 other types. Look on Craig's List in your area for composted horse, chicken, goat, etc. manure or other local composts. Ecoscraps compost at Home depot is a veggie and wood compost. Kelp meal. Worm castings.

I don't know what you mean by "soil." Do you mean dirt, or do you mean composts? If you add dirt, you will not be SF gardening.

Hopefully, someone in your area will see your post and be able to guide you to some local sources.

Looks like you have a lot of good resources on your local craigslist near Temecula!

Buying in bulk is normally a lot cheaper too!  Good luck!!
