Hungry South Dakota School Children cannot Learn
These children need to learn Mel's Square Foot Gardening for Children.......
I received an request for a donation of money to help these school children on the Pine Ridge Reservation located in Shannon County, South Dakota, one of the poorest counties in the U.S...
Most of the students are bused to school because of the distance and get a breakfast and lunch pre-kindergarten thru 12th grade...87% supported by private donations...
I feel the school needs to learn and teach how to grow food .....I plan to send teaching manuals for children to the school and any extra seeds I have for a starter...

Yes. Thanks for posting. Please bring this to the attention of the SFG Foundation directly, as this forum cannot actually make any affective change to the plight of the children... There is a link at the top of this page for the website.

Thanks for posting this. I adopted an 11 and 10 year old who were from South Dakota. They were not being feed as they should. When they came here the first year was amazing watching them help in the garden and wow, did they eat. They were not afraid to help and the 10 year old is now in her 40's and thriving and growing her own food and is a terrific cook. Her brother is, unfortunately, not able since he is disabled - which was definitely caused by malnutrition. How the girl got through this intact is an absolute miracle.
I am going to check into this and maybe some of us in my community can think of a way to help. Teaching them is the answer. Handouts is not the answer to poverty.

I am hoping to contact the powers that be......to see if there is some kind of help that our organization can do for this area of South Dakota......
