Today I went through empty squares in my SFG and filled with baby lettuce mixes and more arugula and snacking carrots. I couldn't stand the emptiness...

Learned a lesson about cucumber transplants this year - not a good idea, as the plant I put in two days ago has got some kind of fungus or leaf problem. I probably shocked it  Sad . So, I took out a container, added some good potting soil (coast of ME) and seeded. Perhaps if I have to pull out the transplant I'll still get some cucs.

I also used a container to seed Kentucky pole beans. I believe I'm still in the window of opportunity.

Put my orange blaze pepper plant in a container. Looking good!

Still, disappointed as last year my garden was filled with eager humble bumbles. The only bees I'm seeing now are my least favorite - yellow jackets. At least they are more interested in my plants than me!

Nice to see you're optimistic!

Good luck on your beans and squash in containers. I'm going to try that with some beans this year, and save seed if successful.

It's still early for cukes, so I think you'll do fine. There are bush varieties, too, and they should be even earlier than regular vining cukes, so that may be a good thing to try on your pot odyssey. I saw some at Territorial Seeds.

Thanks Marc. I'm wondering if I should pull out the cuke transplant since it's showing signs of leaf disease and I think it spreading to my kale. Can't tell if the transplant caused it or if I have a bigger problem.

Are you sure it's leaf disease and not just the usual progressive yellowing of lower leaves from the bottom up as the season continues?

Not yellowing - brown and white patches and spots. I dusted with copper/sulfur and I'm going to wait a few days and see if I can get new non-disease growth. If not, I'm going to pull. I don't want my lacinato kale catching anything. They are still a bit fragile.

Well, good luck then. I guess you're already pulling out the diseased leaves to help prevent spread. Be sure to sterilize your garden tools between plants if you suspect disease.

I tried transplanting cucumbers last year (started seeds indoors) and they were eventually stunted and fell behind ones I direct seeded weeks later...and each year it seems like a volunteer tomato, squash, melon almost always does as well as a transplant by harvest time.
