Hello from a New Member and Beginning Gardener!
Hi there! We are in the process of putting together our very first square foot garden. We live in the Phoenix, AZ area. Our backyard faces west and we have no shade trees at all. Will building a shade and using sun cloth be enough protection from intense sunlight? The summer is not very conducive to growing since it gets so hot here, but I didn't know if the full afternoon sun would still be too much during other times of the year. Are there any other Phoenix area gardeners out there?

Hi Kelli. Welcome!
Not from your area, but know there are some around...! You'll get some good advice from them.

Kelli, Welcome to the Forum! There are quite a few of us who garden in "desert summer" weather. SFG is great for hot environments. Check out 'Newbie in Las Vegas' in the Search Box. There is another desert gardener but I can't remember the name of his topic! You don't have to literally 'build' a shade, but can improvise using the trellis system, stakes, PVC frames, etc., and covering with tulle material, shade cloth, used sheer curtains, etc.
PS Can you change your Location from United States to Phoenix, AZ? That will help folks know what kind of climate you are dealing with.
