Re: pinching pepper plant pics
I planted 1 cayanetta pepper today, it survived to cold onslaught of a few weeks ago.
I have 1 other in my cold frame thats ok, this one did very well after I up planted it.
Now it's sitting in a 10 gallon decorative container, on my deck and surrounded by a wire cage.
I will be fixing up some more extensive protection soon.
My question ??/should I ??? (trim it down)
here's a pic from last years plant, a gorgeous hot pepper that I could sit and look at for hours.
The peppers arent hot hot, mildly hot, can be tasted with confidence.

I'll tag along with Jimmy's question. I over-wintered potted peppers in the greenhouse and cut to 4 leaves. Really beefed up their appearance this summer. What do I do this winter? Cut the new branches back to 3-4 leaf nodes? How many years can this continue?

Sounds like the makings of an experiment!

Re: pinching pepper plant pics
I know which point I would cut at, but I'll let someone who's done it before give the definitive answer.

Re: pinching pepper plant pics
I'm chicken and only pinch out the tiniest bit at the very top of that 5 or 6 leaf cluster when the peppers are this small. But it seems to work. My peppers have bushed out pretty well. I've been know to later also pinch out the tips of the side branches that develop making a really bushy plant.jimmy cee wrote:ok I'm willing, however I can be heavy handed when it comes to this.

I would also cut off the ground level leaves soon to prevent soil borne diseases.

Re: pinching pepper plant pics
I was fairly aggressive and pinched off all but two sets of leaves at the bottom of the plant...these are sweet peppers. My hot pepper plants produce so profusely that I didn't bother pinching those seedlings.
A few years back a rabbit ate the tops of all my pepper plants and I freaked out...but they came back bushier than ever...but I've always been chicken to pinch myself to see what happens.

Okay, I'll bite. I would pinch at the top arrow. Can't wait to read the answer this evening.

I plan on doing this same thing to my marigold plants today. Same spot. They need to bush out more and are a bit leggy. Thanks, archives! LOL

Glad to see this thread. My pepper sprouts don't even have true leaves yet, but now I know what to do when they get to that point. That's a beautiful pepper plant, Jimmy Cee!

Re: pinching pepper plant pics
Interesting! Thanks, has55, I would never have been that aggressive but will try something with my peppers to get more production and a healthier plant! Marigolds got a modest central leader pinch today. Peppers not quite ready, maybe next weekend?

Re: pinching pepper plant pics
Interesting! I got a cherry tomato plant to last 2 years by bringing it in over the winter. Never tried it with peppers, but I will this year. I never knew about trimming peppers and marigolds, either. This site is a wealther of info.sanderson wrote:I'll tag along with Jimmy's question.
