I watched the video of your trellis building on your blog. I tried to comment and ask a question but the Google Ad popped up in the way of the word verification box. LOL Anyway, it was a very well done video and quite informative. I do have a question. Do you not find there is a problem with the hot TX sun heating up the metal? I'd imagine you have similar issues with heat in TX as we have in FL.

Wow, a forum topic with my name on it - that's a first.
Sorry you couldn't post your comment on my blog. I'm much more knowledgeable about gardening than I am blogging so there's still some kinks to work out.
As far as my trellis video... first, thanks for the kudos. I wish I had a helper who could operate the camera so I wouldn't have to do everything on a wide shot from a distance but such is not the case at the moment. As for your question about hot metal, I haven't had any problems in the past. By the time it REALLY gets hot the vines have taken hold and the leaves produce enough shade to prevent the conduit from getting "ouch that burns my hand" hot. Cukes and cantaloupe have good sized leaves so that helps. ... I don't know that I'd do it this way if I were living in Las Vegas but I get away with it here in North Texas.

Re: Tim W.
Thanks for the info Tim! I'll be building one just like it on Thursday or Saturday. Its a great idea and your video was VERY helpful.
I enjoyed your new video on your blog. Your garden seems to be doing well. I thought it very telling to see the difference between the two mixes in the Earth Boxes. Oh, and my daughter is envious of your pond. LOL

Re: Tim W.
The conduit trellis is an easy build. Good luck with it. Post some pics and let me (and others) know how it goes. ... As for the pond I've been into water gardening a LOT longer than I've been doing SFG. I LOVE the sound of running water, the tranquility of fish swimming silently under lily pads, and the beauty of water lilies in bloom - especially the tropical varieties as their fragrance is incredible.
Re: Tim W.
I picked up the stuff at Home Depot today. They had rebar in 2' sections so I bought those instead of cutting something down to 18". I'll be building it in the next couple of days. I need to get it done before my pole beans get any bigger. I'll snap a photo after its done and post it.

Re: Tim W.
Good luck! Watch the rebar as you pound it in as it is possible it could bend. Wet soil makes it easier. - Tim
Re: Tim W.
Would a rubber mallet work best? As for pounding, we only have sand here. No soil to speak of. (sigh) It should go in easy enough. That probably makes the extra inches worth it. If the sprinkles we are having right now don't get heavier, I'll just water it in a bit.
Thanks for all your help with this. It's much appreciated!

@miinva - thanks!
FYI... I bought my netting at Home Depot. 5' x 8' for $3.97.
(I used the soccer net from my son's old soccer goal last year, but it was several years old and looking rather nasty.)

Re: Tim W.
WOW, Tim, what a wonderful garden! It is absolutely beautiful.
I am trying some of the same veggies as you -- Golden Midget watermelon, Gold Medal tomato. Of course, yours are MUCH bigger than mine, my watermelon hasn't even sprouted yet.
You have me all worried about squash borers now. I have all my squash-types in the same bed due to companion planting issues. I do have nasturtiums planned, though... maybe they will help protect?
Do you have any info on how many squares tomatillos take up? I am curious to try them, but I keep remembering my sister's plant in Oregon, which resembled a small tree.

Re: Tim W.
Tim the trellis is magnificent!!!!! I'll get a photo posted when I figure out how to do that on here. (HUGE grin)
Re: Tim W.
I couldn't figure out how the photos work on here but here is a link to my blog post with the pictures...

Re: Tim W.
Looks GREAT! Congratulations. ...wasn't that easy! And since it's made of steal and the nylon doesn't rot it will last for a long, LONG time.
Re: Tim W.
Yes, it was VERY easy. Surprisingly so! The square foot gardens are so neat and orderly. These trellis are too. I love that they'll last so long and I'll easily be able to move them if need be. I got it up none too soon though. My pole beans are starting to put on their runners so they'll be climbing through the trellis before long.
I'm SO excited! LOL
