So much fun!
Hi to the European board!
I just could not wait any longer so I did a bit of planting and sowing yesterday.
I plan to use wooden dividers in the future but for now I am using plastic coated washing line (much faster, really can't wait).
I have two 4 x 4 boxes made of pine, one is 6" deep and one is double that. Yesterday I planted potatoes, carrots, parsnips, onions, spring onions and strawberry plants. And it took no time at all! All I had to do for the seeds was push in my finger to make a hole, can't believe it.
Anyhow, here is a picture of the shallow box, complete with a few sad looking strawberry plants. I am wondering though: I was surprised by the root system on the strawberries - should I have put them in the deeper box or is 6" enough?
The scattered concrete lumps are to hold down the agricultural fleece which will protect against cold snaps and stop the mixture winding up in the sea. (and I am working on the scruffy surroundings, honest )

Re: So much fun!
That is what it is called in the UK, I don't know about USA. It is very thin light white material which can be spread over the crops. It lets the rain through, lifts the temperature a bit in cold climates, and seems to stop water evaporating off so quickly.
Re: So much fun!
That must be English for "voile de croissance"
(same stuff, different name)
Mine's on as we speak because we're expecting some rain, and I'd sit down and cry if all my little sprouts were broken in a downpour.

Good for you Ice Maiden.
Floating row cover over here in the States. Don't ask me why "floating" -- mine got wet and sunk.

So Much Fun
Like yourself Icemaiden I was out there to. Planted 12 cauliflowers, 16 spring onions, carrots & radish.
I have also put in a few flower seeds Cosmos, Stocks.
Pre planted seeds in the green house are showing there heads. French beans are well up about 40 plants put in before I read Mel's book. I then took a few Fuchsia cuttings.
Afternoon of to the Farnbourgh fair. What a great productive day and a great system for gardening.
