Lyndeeloo, Thanks.

Off topic, but a friend just planted a grafted tree with 4 different fruits: a white peach, yellow peach, plum and a 4th one that I forget. Maybe nectarine.

Wow I'd love to see one of those! It must be gorgeous when it blooms and confusing when it fruits.

I was just at HD and saw a small red haven for $19.97. They had all kinds of fruit trees. $19.97 to $44.99. A dwarf bartlett pear followed me home. I will spend the afternoon trying to figure out where I can wedge it in the back yard. Oh me, I can't be trusted to go to the garden center alone.  What a Face

Thank you all for your support.  Is there a 12 step program for gardeners?  Rolling Eyes  I think I might need to join up.

CC I did see some peaches, lots of apples, the pear of course, and a wonderful tart cherry, which I would recommend to anyone who likes to bake. They are fabulous in a pie. I was lucky enough to have a very old tree here in the front yard when we bought the house.

Here in New England now is a good time to plant fruit trees. Just need to be mindful of keeping it watered it's first summer. Ok now I'm being an enabler Boffer. Thanks for the slap Atlantamarie. I'll behave next time, I promise. flower

I'm just re-homing orphaned fruit trees, is all.

It's not a matter of too many trees. It's a matter of too little space.

Oh, No!  Now it's MY turn!

Went to the garden center to get some more course vermiculite and had a Golden Jubilee tomato, a beautiful pot of Greek Basil, & a pot of 4 honeydew seedlings jump in the truck with a package of Thomas Laxton peas!

I guess they were friends with the vermiculite...  That's all I can figure.  But neither of us had the heart to toss them out.

Maybe we need a fruit trees topic.

Just looked online and while Home Depot has the Red Haven peach for $45 (not the Elberta), Lowes, which is closer to me anyway, has both for $22.

HOLD ME BACK.

I'm thinking of going there tonight. Only thing is they have to be planted in full sun 19 feet apart.

In other news, I checked the asparagus today and they're starting to come up nicely. Not 6" a day tho, maybe it's just too chilly for that. Garlic is coming up nicely, strawberries have nice green leaves, and the spinach is coming up. Still have to get the lettuce and plant some carrots out there. Potato planting will be coming up, maybe this weekend.

NHGardener.     Are they dwarf or full size? My fruit trees are dwarf and planted less than 10 ft. Apart. Hmmmm. I only have one peach, I was told the Elberta doesn't have to have another peach.  An apple is ok. So I have 1 peach,  2 apple and now a dwarf pear.

Hmm Lyndeeloo - It could be that Lowes website was a little misinformed, or it could be because their Elberta (the one on the website anyway) is a semi-dwarf. I just googled for Elberta semi-dwarf and read that semi-dwarf trees are actually about 85% as big as standard trees, so their semi-dwarf might be on the big side, depending I guess on what kind of rootstock they used. (Apparently root stock is a big deal, which is why I'd rather shop local nursery, but not at 3x the price.)

I did read that you can really control the size of the tree with pruning, tho. I think there's an art to pruning tho.

Fedco tree orders are over for the season (I got some trees thru Fedco, but not peach) but they sell them for $25. I'd rather go Fedco, but you have to wait years for fruit trees to produce anyway, you hate to wait yet another year to get started.

Dilemmas dilemmas.

I wasn't getting the 2 types of peach trees for pollination, but just because they both sound so good. If that's where the pollination issue came from.

Post  cpl100 2014-04-30, 12:28

I purchase eggs at a poultry farm and today when I went there it occurred to me to ask what they did with their chicken manure.  Turns out they do use it but they also sell some.  Asked him the price and he said ''oh...about 50c a bucket''.

Should I get some?  Can I use it 'fresh'.  I have bought Chickedy Doo and used it in my compost but this seems like a possible cheaper product.

Any cautions?  Useful for all plants or not for certain ones?

Thanks!

My garlic is barely increasing in growth probably because it's been cold and barely any sun.  The spinach, tatsoi and peas that I planted about a week ago show no signs of growth.

The only thing that seems to be coming up is my hostas which are all breaking ground.

How about all of you?
