Cardinal attack
We have a number of resident Cardinals. Lately one of the males has attacked any tomato that starts to ripen. If its red its dead. I don't mind sharing a few but this guy does share at all.
Anyone else have this happen?

I put knee-highs over my tomatoes. It looks kind of funny with all the knee highs hanging all over the garden but it works.

Re: Cardinal attack
Yes, I've had problems with birds attacking plants . . . both tomatoes and peppers.
I use bird netting whenever I seed evidence that birds are interested. Use it in the same manner you would use row cover. If you have hoops over your beds, you can easily secure the netting to the sides of your boxes.

knee high pantyhose. There's a photo in one of the New England threads, probably from the end of last summer. I'll see if I can find it and repost it.GWN wrote:cc wrote:I put knee-highs over my tomatoes. It looks kind of funny with all the knee highs hanging all over the garden but it works.

I have bird netting over my strawberries when I need it . I heard it can be vicious if a bird gets stuck in it so I try not to use it much.

Re: Cardinal attack
Catbirds and mockingbirds are just as bad here. Unfortunately when I used bird netting (cover) I did catch a couple inside the net - DEAD.
Pantyhose sounds a bit safer. Thanks for the idea.

Knee high stockings or hose or hosiery, I understand.
But not being a women's clothing expert, I'm having trouble visualizing what knee high pantyhose look like!
(google was no help!)

Re: Cardinal attack
I know, right? yes, they ripen just fine. I put the pantyhose on when they first started turning red so that the birds wouldn't attack them. This was after having a few holes in some already. But we cut the bird & chippy lip stuff off and ate the tomatoes anyway.bonnie0128 wrote:That. is. hilarious.CapeCoddess wrote:okay, here's the first photo I came across of the pantyhose on the tomatoes.

I suppose one could cut pieces of the pantyhose and use those instead of having a bunch hanging down. That might be more aestheticly pleasing. But the neighbors got a kick out of it so I left them. They are used to me being a bit eccentric.

Hey, it works! That's what counts, right?
Eccentric? Yeah... My neighbors have finally gotten used to hearing, "Hi, neighbor!" and seeing a mysterious hand wave from behind the blueberry bushes during July/August. I know they get a kick out of us...

Re: Cardinal attack
I think someone here last summer was saying that sometimes birds do that as much because they want the water content as anything else, and that leaving a pan of water out can make them go after your tomatoes less.
I had so many critter problems with tomatoes last year that I'm probably going to try that.

There's this collection of eccentric behavior:

There's another topic but I can't copy and paste 2 threads without losing this post. The other one is something like 'you know you are a square foot gardener (or SFG) when you . . "
Re: Cardinal attack
Being a newbie I hadn't seen the funny gardening posts.
We have a large water pan out for the critters. There is always birds drinking or bathing in it. The squirrels and even my dogs drink from it. I flush it out weekly to keep the skeeters out.
Last year the woodpeckers found the mangos tasty. The day before my first pineapple was ready something ate the entire thing. Figured that must be a raccoon. That was a big disappointment.
