So last year my SFG went downhill due to me not being a good enough daddy to my garden.  Sad   The only thing that I manage to keep were my garlic.   Mmmmm, wonderful young garlic scapes are amazing in a saute.

This year it's an overhaul.    I'm moving all my boxes, er, I mean, rebuilding all my boxes due to the fact that they all rotted from being untreated wood.  Oh, and the hornets loved the shelter of overgrown grass in the SFG boxes.  So this year, instead of being off the side and up the hill where I could so conveniently forget to water every morning, my boxes will be at the front of the house where we all (kids, wife and I) will contribute.  Yes, kids, I'm talking about you *complaints in the background*.

So we have a plan for this year:
- 3 cold frames to start the year off
- Lettuce, spinach, swiss chard
- Radish, leeks, tomatoes
- Corn, sunflowers (not in the sfg)
- Potatoes
- Green beans, more green beans and even more green beans
- Watermelon, pumpkins
- Zucchini

Now, all I need is a turret and night scope to keep away the deer and some ducks to eat the slugs.  Only problem, can't get a permit for a 20mm self guiding automatic turret.  I don't have a fence to keep the foxes out of the duck house.

Anyone else have big plans for this year???

Jacques.

Having the boxes closer will help in remembering to water or pluck that young weed before it takes hold. I've seen a lot of topics here about not using treated wood for veggie boxes.  If you want to seal them, use RAW linseed oil on the inside.  There is something else that someone recommended or used that is also safe.

Do you use a mulch during the summer?  It will reduce watering frequency.

If there's something that really puts me in a bad mood is seeing weeds come up, especially when you're sure you plucked them all out the day before  Smile  , I don't really care that much about the wood rotting, I can always make new ones next to free anyway, that is always nice to build something every few years.

I have never mulched my garden at all, I never really thought of doing that.  Is there a particular mulch you recommend?

I've used home made compost as mulch not only for shade and weed suppression, it also becomes slow release nutrition every time you water or it rains.  My boxes receive close to 15 hrs. of sun.  So taller boxes, 8-12 inches, and mulch works very well.

Homemade compost or shredded bark mulch is what I use for mulching.

Playground plain wood chips. What a plant-saver to have some type of mulch in the warmer weather.
