Help So Cal-ers! Need some Wester Garden Guide info Empty Help So Cal-ers! Need some Wester Garden Guide info

Post  Chopper 2/2/2014, 11:36 pm

I am finally going to be able to garden again!!! BUT, I am moving to Warner Springs which is in the Western Garden Guide Zone 7. I need to get the vegetable planting guide for that zone. In the new book it starts on page 700. I was going to buy one but I decided $32 for four pages of info was too much.

Would love to get scanned pics of them so I can start making my own planting guide for my zone.

Thanks ahead of time to anyone who can come through!!!!

Thanks, but I really need the detail of the WGG. Warner Springs is above 3000' and I want to know when to plant what with some accuracy. I know what to do from 0-2000' but not above. Does no one have the book? Sad I have a great chart I use and used to share on this forum. I want to make the adjustments to the higher elevation if possible. My phone camera was not up to the task of taking pictures of the pages in the store or I would have done that! LOL.

Have you checked with your local library? They might have a copy you could check out.

Not really Has55. And not easily. Too many variations in climate and the above 2000' is neglected. I went to the library and got a hard cover WGG and lo and behold it does not have the chart every other freaking WGG has. I am so frustrated. LOL. I am begging. If anyone has a cope, can you please scan those vegetable planting pages that refer to zone 7? I already have a chart and all I have to do is plug in adjusted dates. It is the best reference I have found to date.

So, I needed this. I went into Lowes and grabbed a Western Garden book and brought it to outdoor furniture and took my time getting pictures of the pages I needed. Can we say crazy frugal? LOL. DONE! And it really was a help. For only moving 30 miles it is quite a different growing season. Should be interesting.

I understand! A friend of mine only lives 20 miles away, but because she is on top of the small plateau nearby, her season starts 2 weeks later than mine and ends 2 weeks earlier. Considering my growing season is only about 125 days, you can see what a difference it makes for her - a whole month chopped off! She also gets colder temps, enough to change her hardiness zone. I am 4a, she has to plant for 3 or she would have no surviving fruit trees.

After spending a lot of time taking the planting times and plugging them into a spreadsheet I must say there is definitely a difference in what you can plant when. California is not just one place. 99% of those living here can go by one chart for veggies more or less, but once you hit actual frost and freeze (or excessive heat) it does change.

So for my region I can plant this month (maybe more, but for sure)
Beets
Lettuce
Onions/Garlic sets
Peas
Radish
Spinach
Turnips

Compared to most So Calers:
Beets
Broccoli
Brussel Sprouts
Cabbage
Carrots
Cauliflower
Leeks
Lettuce
Onions/Garlic sets
Peas
Potatoes
Spinach

So I get more lettuce and less time for tomatoes but I am sure it will all work out. Help So Cal-ers! Need some Wester Garden Guide info Icon_wink
