Cricket Poo? Empty Cricket Poo?

Post  H_TX_2 1/27/2014, 12:53 pm

Christmas brought a reptile into our house and along with the reptile were feeder crickets. After looking to purchase cricket online I found a cricket farm that sells cricket poo. Also after keeping crickets they leave behind cricket poo on rolled up tubes of news paper. Has anyone here used cricket poo in their compost? I am thinking about throwing the newspaper with the cricket poo into my compost bin. Not exactly sure about buying a jar of cricket poo but I don't think it would hurt. How beneficial do you think cricket poo would be? Can anyone think of any negatives associated with the cricket poo like diseases, attracting other bugs or anything else.

Thanks for the input. I was thinking it would be okay since just about all of probably have some cricket poo (aswell as other insect poo) already in our SFG.

Tha quikett poo sound like gud fing grass opper  Laughing

The body part will give a reasonable decay time and the dung will give a boost to growing plants.
In the compost bin the bin worms will go through it and help produce heavens knows what .... whatever it is that they alter the through put from  it will be beneficial to your compost & beds.

Would you please keep a detailed record of everything if you do decide to use it ....we may have found  a new easy obtainable source of compost or nutrients for the five way element in Mels mix .

Dave now uses eBay UK to check out if it is available over here.

Years ago at school  when I was 13 we dropped 1 & a 1/2  pound of fresh minced meat with fats into one of the big glass bulb shaped cleaned out 15 gallon acid carboys added one blue bottle fly and put the rubber cap lid on it . Within a few hours we could see fly eggs , a day later we started to see the maggots emerge  and then the pupae's and then the hatching into zillion of new blue bottles .

The carboy was left capped for well over a year and it was amazing to see how the cycle of life was repeated before our very eyes.
(Being a lad it was th infra dig thing to lift the cap when the teacher was not there , take a decent sniff of the foul air in the bottle and be strong enough not to puke up at it ..do that and you'd be able to join the black button club ..yeah those who'd done it had to carry a 1 inch dia black button in your school blazer top pocket )
In my last year at school I was asked to help empty the carboy into an outdoor  sink in the rural science lab gardens . ( the science teacher had used ether to kill the flies and maggots .
I was fascinated to see the zillions of wings and bit's of body parts .. the RS teacher left them over night and the next day they were spread over the compost heap .
From start to finish the whole experiment had been weighed every school day the end weigh was just a tad under the start weight .. good science to show us kids the cycle of life and how energy changes form when it is used .
