Post  mrwes40 7/24/2013, 3:56 pm

Anyone else feeling the effects in their garden from a wet June? My toms are suffering from blossom end rot. It's either a calcium deficiency, or more likely due to the extreme amount of rain we've had over the past 2 months.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Bill

Everything in my garden is wicked late because of the cold and then the rain. Then the heat came and no tomato or eggplant fruit set. One thing after the other here.

The BER is probably related to poor calcium uptake. It is impossible to look at the garden to determine if it is because calcium is deficient or is inaccessible to the plant because of pH. I recommend a soil test  done by Umass. The turnaround time is about a week, or less because of your proximity to Amherst.

You are talking about "normal" PNW weather. Usually the first level of our tomatoes have BER because it is too cold for them to take up the (phosphorus? I don't remember off hand) that allows them to take in calcium. Sometimes the plant looks purplish, sometimes it is a deep, deep shade of forest green. When the garden warms up all is well. We do all kinds of things to heat up our tomatoes. Ray built me a big poly tent on my tomato garden this season, but oddly enough, we had one of those rare, hot springs and a warm, dry June. No BER for me this year.

Getting your mix tested is always a good idea if you can finance it, so do that, but "I'm jus sayen"
