I know the measurement is by volume, but over the winter the compost mix I was saving shrank by a third.

I mixed my 5 composts for mel's mix last year at the end of the season thinking I would put anther 4x4 garden in. But didn't get around to it so I stored the compost mix in one squre plastic tub. Put a lid on it and set the peat and vermiculite in their bags on top of it with an overturned barrell protecting the bags from the rain. Unfortunately, the barrel sat on top of the square tube only partially protecting it from rain. I guess the weight caused the lid to sag and crack.

It was almost two cubic feet of runny compost, so I added a bag of worm castings I had to make it a little more than two. It mixed well with 2 cu feet each of peat and vermiculite. Looked rich like the stuff I used last year, had a good feel to it and it lost the smell, just like last year. However, it filled up only about 2/3 of the 4x4.

Even though the original proportions were correct, (cow manure mix, mushroom compost, chicketypoo, worm castings, cotton burr mix) I guess I need to add more compost mix and an equal amount each of peat and vermiculite. Does that sound right? (right now, I only find the cow manure, cotton burr and worm stuff readily available)

What would you do?

Yes, compost continues to, well, compost! (Break down). Sounds like you'll need more.

You have the three components all separate right now, that's perfect. Use a five gallon bucket and a tarp or a wheelbarrow and add one bucket of each component (fluffed peat moss, vermiculite, blended compost). Mix well, dump in your bed and water it in. Repeat until your bed is full. This way your proportions will always be correct and your mix will be saturated and ready to plant. Mix up extra compost first though, because you don't want a single new ingredient filling in at the end, you want a blended batch of compost in each bucket.
