the official answer is no (official according to seed starting experts, not Mel.) There could be little diseases in the dirt that could hurt or kill the little seedlings.

However, I have been thinking this very question today. If I plant zucchini seeds, I can either direct sow them outside (which would be in Mel's Mix) or start them inside, so.....

I'll be interested to see what others have to say.

I do it frequently to replant something into. Martha, are you referring to using mel's mix as a seed starter?

I've used Mel's Mix all over my gardens! In pots, in flower beds lined with landscape cloth, in anything I plan to put a plant in. It is the first and only time I have had plants survive.

My husband replaced all the dirt in his flower pots with Mel's Mix and his flowers were awesome last year. I highly recommend Mel's Mix. It is what makes the whole thing work -- for me anyhow.

I forgot to tell you how happy we all are that you are here! Mel's Mix as potting soil 396615Welcome to the forums. This is a very active forum and you can get lots of good help here. Some of us are brand new and some have lots of SFG experience under their belt. Please keep coming back and let us know how you are doing with your garden.

BTW if you were talking about starting seeds in Mel's Mix, I have no experience as I use vermiculite. However, my annual flowers have reseeded themselves prolifically outside in the Mix and I have seedlings all over the place out there!

Mel's Mix as potting soil Empty Thanks!!

Post  MrRandy Mon Apr 19, 2010 10:52 pm

Thanks everyone for the fast replies. I love my SFG . I only have one so far 4x4 with Dill, Marjoram, Marigolds, Radishes, Garlic, Dusty Miller, 3 kinds of thyme, 2 kinds of basil, lemon balm, and Buttercup lettuce. Everything is growing great and I've already harvested some lettuce.

I hope you all have a great day!
