What do you think will happen

Post  llama momma on 3/30/2013, 3:34 pm

I had an older 4ft by 8ft bed, one foot deep of mels mix. I've been removing the bottom 6 inches and replacing with several years old llama manure. Then putting 6 inches of mels mix back on top. The extra Mel's mix is filling new boxes. My half baked theory is when I take a brick and compress the old manure mixed with hay and some leaves it'll easily make contact with the soil through the hardware cloth and worms should discover quite a banquet down there and eventually make their way up. While the veggies in the top 6 inches should continue to get everything they need from the compost in mels mix.... It's sort of expanding on the whole worm tube idea, but instead covering the entire bottom of the box. I was in the mood for a big experiment and using Mels mix more efficiently. geek

I think it sounds like a neat idea in theory. Hope it works!

But alas, I have leaves, seaweed and compost in the bottom of my boxes but have yet to see a worm in any of them. They are, however, all over my compost pile, which is pretty much the same thing. thinking

Oh wow your bottom mix sounds Really good too. I don't know how long you've had your boxes like that, but you prob. know early spring warmth should activate the worms and cocoons will be hatching. While working out there today I was happy to see cocoons in the mix and a few sluggish adults. Here's to our souped-up beds. Wink
