Hi, My name is Seaason, happy hi
I have recently moved to Vermont USA from the tropics of Australia, i am very keen on starting a vegetable garden but i have never experienced a climate like this before, where im from, you can throw a seed anywhere, and pretty much all year round, you can guarantee a successful plant, but here, the ground is frozen solid, i dont know anything about frost, i had never even seen snow before this winter lots o !!
And i have never germinated seeds indoors before, and i don't know whats best to plant when...
i am planning on growing Zucchini, Summer Squash, bell peppers, Cucumber, Cherry Tomatoes, big Tomatoes, Lettuce, Onions, Spinach, sweet Corn, Ornamental Corn, Garlic & a variety of herbs new to the Northern Hemisphere 1280598131
An ambitious undertaking, considering im pretty much starting from scratch when it comes to gardening know how LOL thinking
thanks any advise will be greatly appreciated, thanks

May your harvest be bountiful new to the Northern Hemisphere 3170584802

Welcome to the great white north.
You'll have lots to learn with our much shorter growing season. Spring is the time to begin.
Get the "All New Square Foot Gardening" book by Mel Bartholomew for a start. That will help you get your raised beds started. Its much easier growing in raised beds.
Also enter words in the "Search" box upper left and take time to read the threads and see the pictures. That will help a lot.

In Vermont you'll have only a few months to grow a crop to harvest. That means you'll have to start seeds indoors and grow them til its warm enuf for outdoor transplanting, or in you first year you could buy seedling plants at your local nursery and big box stores like Home Depot, Lowe's and Walmart. I found that the best way my first year in 2009 until I learned more by the following year.

Just jump right in and start learning. We're always here to answer specific questions and help all we can.

Nnnnnnnnooooooooooooo! Get yourself the right stuff and make up some Mel's Mix! Honestly the best way to start a new garden. As Quiltbea suggested, I too suggest you get a hold of a copy of the All New Square Foot Gardening book (second edition). Until you do, go to the home page of this forum and on the left of the screen see the word hover..... The list of threads will give you a great head start.
Oh! And glad you\'re here I am about 2.5 hours south of you near Brattleboro. Nice to have a new friend from Oz,
Cheers! What a Face

Seaason....You need to find your last frost date. Go to google and type in 'last frost date maps.' Find your area and you'll see the date.
Then go to www.johnnyseeds.com and find their planting chart and enter your last last frost date to get a planting chart that will tell you when to start what seeds indoors and when to plant them outdoors.
Good luck.

Whitney welcome ! What a shock going from Australia to Vermont! When I moved from Sunny California to Utah where they have their four season. I totally agree with Quiltbea about finding your frost dates and when to grow things. I also agree with Camprn about starting off with the right growing medium. This forum is for teaching and sharing the true sfg method developed by Mel Bartholemew. It has been thoroughly researched for many many years and is tried and true. Top soil may be good for lawns, but for the intensive growing that sfg entails, you need the best. You already have a raised bed, that's great. You already plan to dig out the rocky soil, that's great.

Now is the absolutely perfect time to get your growing medium set up so you will have the best results. Buy the Second Edition as mentioned. It will be your gardening bible. If you want to do some reading before you are able to get your book, go to the left where it says "Search" and in the white box type in "How strong is your backbone". You will learn how to make what we call Mel's Mix! From there if you have questions about that, ask away. Click on different topics and do some reading to get more learning under your belt. Everyone is so willing to help! Luckily there are very knowledgeable people who can help at any step! As time goes, you will be able to help others with your experience and knowledge and it will be very welcomed!

Hi Seaason,
Welcome to the world of square foot gardening.

In my strap line are the details of the very latest upto date book by Mel Bartholomew for the All New Square Foot Gardening second edition plus the ISBN code for the book .
It covers everything you kneed to know about starting up our type of square foot gardens and how to make the soil less growth medium we use to fill the beds .
There are several very helpful planting schedules in the book and info about finding the last frost date in your area.

I for one sincerely reccommend you get hold of a copy as soon as you can and get it under your nose for a couple of hours .
The more you read it, the clearer it will become and the better you gardens will turn out.

When you do get started would you please take a shed load of piccies and post the progress as it occurs.
