Breeding Tomatoes Empty Breeding Tomatoes

Post  jmsieglaff on 1/11/2013, 9:03 am

Has anyone tried breeding their own tomato and had success?

I've done a little reading about physically how to do it (before flower opens manually pollinate, etc.). It seems that in what I've read you save seeds from the fruit that you crossed. Plant a number of those seeds the following year and select the most vigorous plants/plants with most desirable traits (flavorful fruit, etc.). So at that point I'm a little confused--do you just save seeds from those selected plants and let them self-pollinate in subsequent years or do you keep crossing? Eventually you'd have to let them self-pollinate otherwise you'll always have a new hybrid, right?

Thanks!

You continue saving seeds of the plants/fruits that exhibit the traits you are looking for or consider optimal. The phenotypes begin segregating in the F2 (or second generation) so this is where the largest grow-out is required to be able to make the best selection.
