HOOPS & PLASTIC COVERINGS
How much do you think you can gain if you use the hoops and plastic coverings. I am in Iowa and was wondering how much earlier I could start the cooler plants like onions, lettuce, radishes, etc. Would I be able to start 3 - 4 weeks earlier?

I'm in Maine, zone 5a. I don't have a hoop house, but I have an A-frame I built that serves the same purpose.
Yes, you can get 2-4 week earlier crops under cover. I started cool greens, radishes, and spinach extra early and got results.
Mizuna picked April 6th.
Some Mizuna and Tokyo Bekana in early May growing in the A-frame.
So the answer is, yes, you can have earlier crops with hoop houses.
Our last frost date is around May 15th these days. It used to be May 30th.

Radish can go into the garden when the soil can be worked. Lettuce likes a warm growing medium to germinate, but it will grow at cooler temperatures. May want to start it inside. Onions also like warmth for germinating, but they are very long growing and should probably be started in your house in March.deriter wrote:How much do you think you can gain if you use the hoops and plastic coverings. Thank you two for responding. I tell ya I have cabin fever so bad this year that just about all I can think about is this garden stuff. You say the radishes can go in the garden as soon as you can work the soil? Well I think I could work it up with an ice pick right now. On second thought that might not work. I have been thinking though I would get one of those indoor/outdoor thermometers and put remote inside the hoop to keep track of the temperatures from inside the house.
