Hi everyone. i just joined the forum today and I look forward to sharing and learning with you. My gardern sured tremendious hard ship from what I am the co=op believe is tobacco mossiac virus. I know i can not save the plants or even the seeds. I have transplants for my fall garden that need to go in this bed. My question is can the soil be ammended so that this fall planting will not be infected. It is in a stand up bed and a raised bed that my husband made for me. I really don't have the option of walking away from them. Worst case, if I have to remove all that soil and start over, is there any meothod to clean thesa structures to prevent future contamination?

Hi Beau and welcome to the Square Foot Garden Forum...

I really do not know the answer to your question but you can use the search feature at the bottom of the 'Latest Topics' column to the left. If you find the answer elsewhere on the internet, please share your findings with us.

Do you have a Square Foot Garden?

Welcome Beau! I found an article which discusses tobacco mosaic virus. How was this diagnosed on your plants? The reason I am asking is that the article said it is difficult to diagnose. Toward the end of the article, it describes how to kill the virus that may be in the soil. You have to get all of the plant material out of the soil first. Then you use very hot steam that has to be 200 degrees. Your tools need to be sterilized also.

If it were me, I would plant the fall plants somewhere else until I was sure the soil was fully treated. Good luck!
