Re: Corn per square
Last month, I planted 4/square in a 1 x 3 box. Cat loves the corn leaves and stalks, and has felled 3 of the 12, just like a beaver. This is just my first experiment with corn (with Silver Queen at that!) at 4/sq. So far no daughter stalks. Maybe the side stalks are more common when planted less dense. Like like the giant "1 per 9 square feet" like SG has!!!
Re: Corn per square
Oh man! silly cat. We put hardware cloth "covers" over our beds until the plants push up the cover, then let them go. Sorry about your corn! hope you get some. We have tried for 3 years to get some "good corn"...Good luck!!sanderson wrote:Last month, I planted 4/square in a 1 x 3 box. Re: Corn per square
Sweetie, silly cat, has been excellent about "using" the beds or eating anything else. Just the giant grass!!
Re: Corn per square
This year, I planted 8 per square, because much of the seed was old. Naturally everything came up!
Not every stalk has been productive, but at least 1/3 have been. Although there are/have been several tiny ears, the others that I've harvested have been averaqe in size, although certainly not large.
As I mentioned elsewhere, my neighbors can't believe I grew 7' corn in 6" of Mel's Mix. and they think it's the healthiest corn in the neighborhood.
