Finally.....Summer Squash!
So, after three years of trying (and failing) to grow zucchini, in the last two days I have harvested two beautiful yellow squashes!! And there are a few baby green zucchinis on the other plant, although I'm not going to count those chickens until they're on my plate I've never understood those who have to find ways to give away their excess zucchini.....I'd settle for a few good ones to saute with onions!

That's funny, I could have used a few more zukes as well! but I only had one plant, next year I will plant more and hopefully be giving some away!

Re: Finally.....Summer Squash!
Next year I am planting a boat load of summer squash and winter squash plants with hopes I will get more than one summer squash. Stupid SVB.

Not to make light of your struggles to grow zucchini, but I'm glad I'm not the only one! For me it hasn't been SVB (thank you whoever suggested growing radishes with the squash) but powdery mildew or just plain old squash-gets-two-inches-long-and-turns-yellow-and shrivels-up! Still haven't figured that one out! This has been a weird season - I'm growing things I've never had success with, and the things I thought I had figured out are struggling. Now I know why my farmer stepdad was always complaining.....

Squash fruit that gets about an inch or two then collapses is usually a pollination issue, or lack thereof. Glad you got some squash!

Camprn - I do think pollination has been an issue in the past. Last season I had to hand-pollinate my eggplants and finally got some but it wasn't a stellar harvest. And, of course, NO zucchini. This season, we have LOTS of bees! I'm not sure why exactly. We have a neighbor who has kept bees but he said recently they all left his hives (I need to tell him I think they're in my garden) In fact, I'm kind of afraid to go poking around my tomatillo plants due to all the bees - I've never been stung and don't want to start now!

Re: Finally.....Summer Squash!
ksbmom you may want to tell your neighbor to come check out your bees. Maybe he lost his queen and you gained one and now you have a possible hive. For your zucchini you may not have had the male flowers come on at the right time as the female flowers and that may be why they didn't get pollinated.
I had three zucchini plants and two summer squash. I got a few zucchinis and then the powdery mildew killed those three zucchini plants. I lost one summer squash plant and the one left only gave me a few squashs but at least I got a few on both.
