Onion sets for fall? Empty Onion sets for fall?

Post  kittykat 8/26/2012, 6:59 pm

I have a bag of onion sets I didn't plant this spring. I'm in the Pacific Northwest. Can I plant these now for a fall crop of at least small green onions for the dehydrator?

Thanks for your input!

I don't think you have anything to lose, kittycat. If you wait until spring to plant I think they will dry up.

I believe you will not have enough daylight hours to have the onions bulb up or do anything besides put out some foliage.

Thanks for the responses! Yeah, it probably won't net anything, but, well, they'll be dead for sure by next spring if I leave them in the bag. I'll give it a go! But without too much expectation.. LOL

Thanks again!

It mainly depends on the harshnes of your winters at the coast & the sort of onion you are using..
You may get some overwintering onion sets that will be OK to use straight away around early June next year

how many do you have? do you have room for a pot of them indoors? if so, i'd just grow them outside until the weather is no good, then bring them in. alternately, you can plant them now, cover them well with mulch and other protection as needed when it gets cold, and they will probably hold until spring.

if you believe they won't last until then in a bag inside, it's worth a try. in fact, i'd probably try both, just to see which works better.

Here's a tip for reviving old onion or garlic sets that my brother shared with me a few years ago:

Soak them in water for a couple of hours before planting.

You can tell by feeling the sets whether they are still alive or not. If they have dried so much that they smush when you squeeze them; they are gone. But if you feel a hard kernal in the center, there's still life there, and they will grow.
