How does the Aoli freeze?  I'm thinking of plastic baby food containers.

I take that as a good sign! The basil I had that was next to one of the incandescent lights, was blooming or just about to! Wink

Mine were real green, healthy and big, during 2013. Wink They seem to like incandescent lights!

We try to keep it trimmed back and free from blooming. Once it blooms it thinks it’s accomplished life's mission and slows growth to put that energy into seed development. Trimming will promote branching if not there at least somewhere else on the plant, thats a good thing.
Here in Sept. We cut a few nice 4-5 inch tops off and set in a glass 1/3 cull of water, in a few days roots will appear and in a week or two plant them in pots. That gives you some basil thru the winter. If those get too big or leggy trim more cuttings and start new plants again. That is how I get my next season early basil started. This is very repeatable and so far in several years can’t tell any of it apart. Usually remove a couple leaves from lower stem leaving 4-5 at top alone. Thanks for the aioli recipe !

Who sells it?

Basil is a perennial in the tropics, if I understand correctly, so really all basil is perpetual basil, just transplanted to less hospitable climes and grown as an annual. I'm curious how perpetual is perpetual in this case.

Kind of like how I've read about perpetual spinach and chard and four-seasons lettuce that I then read is prone to bolt in the summer (D'oh!).

I merged the picking basil thread into this one. On page one there is a photo tutorial.

I'm planting my herbs in my greenhouse this year so that I can try to keep them alive during the winter.  My thyme has done amazingly in there if I can get my basil to sprout (struggling this year with that) we'll see if we can baby it through the winter cold.

As to pruning Basil - I just cut it back about 1/3 every time it starts to get out of hand and especially when it tries to bloom.  Once one of them is growing I've never had a problem with keeping it growing!

This was my first attempt at growing basil. So far, so good. The plants are big and healthy. They're about to be tested, however. Our temps are soaring and my herb bed is almost finished, so there is a transplant in their future. affraid
