Indianapolis - First Stab at SFG.....
Hi, there -
My wife saw an article somewhere about SFG, so I, the endless romantic, bought Mel's book for her on Valentine's Day....
As of today, we have peas, onions, and a couple of types of lettuce planted in two beds 4 x 4 cedar beds that I built on Easter. One of the beds is 6" tall, and the other 14" tall....(I'll get more supplies to fill the taller bed this week.....)......
I attempted a garden in my early twenties, at a house my first wife and I rented, and it was a disaster......Weeds.....Weeds.......(I will always fondly remember that garden, however. I was weeding one early weekend morning, listening to classical music on a portable radio, and my ex wife walked out with an EPT and announced that she was pregnant with my, and our, only son.....)
That moment, in a garden that was growing stuff, was one of the most surreal, and happy moments that I've had......I'll skip the metaphors......
Now, at 47, and with a new wife several years younger than me, and grown son, I'm digging this digging......
Checking out the garden centers for trellis netting. Trying to find my direction on composting. Worrying about the bees that our white German Shepherd's stalk in our back yard. (They eat them!.......).....Enthusiastically looking ahead to more beds. Watching for little sprouts in the dirt.....Loving the smell of manure, and looking forward to sprucing up the back yard to enhance the appearance of our new beds......Stone, or pavers? Not sure, yet....
Today, I bought more vermiculite, and two different types of trellis netting at a local garden center.....I told the lady that helped me that it was for my wife's peas in her (our) new "Square Foot Garden". She said that they have had a ton of people come in this year and comment on their first SFG......
Then, the cell phone in her back pocket started playing "Thunderstruck".....You know - AC/DC - Thunderstruck........
I showed her my Kiss Chase Bank credit card, and walked outside into one of the best days we've had this year in central Indiana.......
Thunderstruck? At a garden center?
You bet I am.......
I'll keep you posted......
(edited for enthusiasm......)

Re: Indianapolis - First Stab at SFG.....
Hey, I'm in Indy too, doing my first sfg this year. I'm in Castleton. I've got 5 4x4 boxes, one for each of us, they are almost full of things now. already ate a few lettuce leaves!
Lots of fun, isn't it?
