I'm wondering when to direct seed sugar snap peas and salad greens?

We had marginal success after it got hot with salad greens planted in a window bos and placed inthe shade but I'd like to know how much cooler it needs to be to place in my reg SFG.

Secondly, how much heat can snap peas handle to have a fall crop?

thanks,

I'll give an answer. I am in zone 6a, which is close. Normally that means first killing frost is late oct. or early november.

Peas and most greens mature in about 60 days, so you should be good starting anywhere from now to mid september. I had good luck planting last year at this exact time. I think they went in Aug 15th. My production is better in the spring, but your mileage may vary.

Both are "frost tolerant", so they can handle a couple frosts.

I'm in zone 6 also. I planted my sugar snap peas mid to end of July in mostly shade and they are up a foot already - no flowers yet. I'll be putting in some more this weekend.

As an experiment, I planted some lettuce seeds in the shade of other plants over the past month. The ones that sprouted are growing, but VERY slowly in this heat. Some just didn't bother to show up at all. I plan on planting some out in the open under burlap shade cover this weekend as next week is supposed to drop into the 70's in my area. (crossing fingers)

I planted some lettuce in July and nothing came up. Re-planted a week or so ago and it has sprouted but isn't doing much. That is, unless I am mistaking weeds for the lettuce (in my SFG) again. I have apparently done that several times already this year! (Watered those weeds faithfully and admired their growth, too! Embarassed )

I'm in zone 6. Last fall was first SFG for me. I planted last week of August, peas, lettuce, carrots & beets. When frost came in October, I covered the garden and kept it going through November. I was determined to get some peas from those vines, just a small bowl but they were delish. The beets did not form the beet root, but the greens were good on my salad. Good luck with your Fall garden.
