Broken Zucchini Vine
Broken Zucchini Vine
Help!? My zucchini vine broke about one foot from the end where all the baby zucchini's are.
I read online that I should cover it with soil but it sticks up in the air about a foot off the ground so I'd be covering most of the plant.
I ended up folding it back in on itself, trying to place the broken pieces back together, then staking it up like that. It didn't really piece together like a broken cup would but they are touching. Will that work? Or should I just cut it off? If I cut off the vine will it grow a new main vine?

Did it break in two or is it hanging together? If in two. there's likely no hope and the plant will put out a new runner; if it is still hanging together, it may survive with some support.

Thanks, Camprn. That gives me hope either way.
It has some fibers still connected, but I couldn't get down under to see how much. OH, I shoulda stuck my camera down there...oh well, next time.
I cut off a couple of the heavier end leaves, too, to remove some of the weight.
Mel talks about taping after operating for SVB. Do you think I should try to tape the break? What kind of tape? Medical tape?

I find that they can survive on just a thread it seems as the year goes on.
IN fact I am often surprised at how healthy the plant is with a worn out broken main stem.

Hey! Good news! My broken vine is producing again! I thought fer sure that I'd have to cut it off - the leaves all deflated, the baby fruits yellowed and came off. But now it's throwing out new leaves, flowers AND a new baby zuc! PSYCHED!

Oh that's exciting! Zucchini are amazingly resilient plants, aren't they? Good luck with it!

that's awesome! My daughter has a watermelon that looks like a slug ate about 90% of the main stem, and that thing is growing like crazy! It's amazing what they can survive on.
