Mid-Late Summer Planting Questions Empty Mid-Late Summer Planting Questions

Post  moldeen85 7/18/2012, 3:00 pm

First off, hello, happy hi I guess this is technically my region. And here I was thinking I was a New Englander all this time.

Okay... maybe I am completely off my rocker for our zone, but I want to fill in a couple holes in my garden with some extra veggies (spinache, cukes, wax beans, peppers, and winter squashes). Rolling Eyes I'm trying to figure out what I can plant. I'm really trying NOT to use seeds because I think they could take longer than I have (before snow falls) to produce? So here are my questions:

1) Is there anywhere to buy transplants in mid-season?

2) If I did have to start seeds, do I have any chance of making it to production before losing it to the cold weather?

3) Has anyone else planted multiple rounds of veggies? I have spaced the planting of my green beans, but I want all kinds more stuff! What a Face

Any and all advice appreciated!! thanks

When is your estimated last frost date. Spinach would be started from seed and can take some frost.

Mid-Late Summer Planting Questions Empty Some Ideas

You should be able to get some stuff at Lowe's or Home Depot there in Liverpool. On the other hand, there was a little spot on Oswego Rd close to 32 as well that used to have nursery items. It's a drive, but Ontario Orchards http://www.ontarioorchards.com/ in Oswego is bound to have everything as well as the Oliver Paine green house www.oliverpainegreenhouses.com on 48 just south of Fulton. I'm sure that if you called them or Ontario Orchards they would be able to tell you if they have the transplants you are looking for. They are both really nice to work with.

Speaking from experience, Your first snow comes about the same time ours does.... Halloween. However, the lake keeps that area warmer than other places, so as long as you protect a little from the snow weight and wind you can grow cool weather crops for some time. (According to my reading spinach and the like will do ok sheltered/covered even in the 30's.)

Happy planting, *sigh* Rudy's on the lake and Dinosaur BBQ Sad
