It was sure fun reading through these posts.  Some I had read as they were posted a while back but it is always fun to reread and there are always things that refresh my memory.  I lost my last hen in the fall of last year and I am debating whether I should get more chickens this spring.  Having chickens do strongly encourage (force) me to go outside because they need taking care of, even if I am hurting a great deal and would much rather not, lol.

Here is a beautiful coop my sister posted on FB for me to see.  I would love that, but much smaller.

OMG!!Too much!!  I can see why the commentors wanted one for themselves.

We are fortunate. We don't have all those predators.  Just a loose dog from time to time.  But we want a large run to keep the chooks safe.

Kauairosina, I agree.  Luckily I didn't have the predators either.  I like the idea of a bigger run.

R&R, that is so exciting for you to get your first chickens!  Good for you about raising bees!

I spent way too much time last night looking at chicken photos.  Mainly, looking at what is called "free range" and uncaged, which is not what you guys do.  You guys really let your chickens play in the dirt outdoors!  scratch for bugs and greens, stretch and flap their wings, and let them develop a natural pecking order.  I understand that some areas have predators and have to keep the outdoor run enclosed with chicken wire, etc., but it seems that even a small outdoor enclosure can make healthier birds.  I can't believe that many operations still use tiered cages!  I ended on a happy note looking at chicken porn, healthy beautiful colorful chickens. Very Happy

I love looking at pictures and especially videos of peoples chickens.  Ive never been around them before so Im very excited.  Ive just been reading non-stop about them on the BYC  & their FB page.  A lot of people post problems/ illnesses on there so I can get a heads up on potential problems.

I ordered from Meyer (2 hr drive) and will pick up.  I ordered 9-10 chicks, different breeds.  An easter egger, salmon faverolle, white sultan, buckeye, golden laced wyandotte, speckled sussex, gold buff, dominique, black australorp, and a meal maker if they give me one.  Ive got the brooder almost ready, (cardboard boxes in large dog crate) and we're going to convert our lean to into an open air coop plus build the run.   What a Face

Chicken people, I have a question.  Is it possible to unleash your chickens on a bug infestation in your garden without your chickens destroying your plants?  Lets say I have a yellow squash plant with a lot of squash bugs, can you stick your chicken over the area supervised?  Would they go after the bugs?

Can chickens be on insect patrol in the garden without tearing up the plants?

R&R......I haven't let loose our girls in a garden bed that I plan on eating from still Laughing from what I have seen of them on old plants that are left over from harvesting....they like to scratch all around any plant and will dig it right up.....some how our smartie pants girls know that worms like to hang out at the root base of plants Razz and they LOVE greens!

BUT.....last summer we did let the girls out to free range in the back yard thinking we could stand guard over our plants and shoe them away.....(not a bright idea, but we are first time chicken keepers LOL) I seen them go under our squash plants and the plant was full grown and the girls didn't try to dig around it....IM assuming its because the plants are prickly.....so...I say give it a try with one chickie at a time and see how they do if you end up with the icky squash bug again this year.....and ....keep us posted on how it goes Very Happy

MY experience is that chicks need a hen (which would be you in this case) to teach them to eat certain bugs and slugs.  Greens and worms they just go for with little prompting.  They can take apart young broccoli and peas faster than you can blink... Mad

I let my chickens in my garden area so they could eat earwigs and other bugs.  I was in there with them and they were searching and eating bugs.  But before I knew it, they started pecking and eating a wonderful zucchini, lol.  If they get their sights on something they want, there is no stopping them.

we read this too about teaching the young chicks to eat slugs....and it worked great for us as now some of our girls prefer slugs over worms....who knew! Razz

what we did with our little baby chicks in their brooder:

we would pull up some dandelions & chick weed with the clump of dirt and all attached and put this in their brooder from the min they came home with us......this helps their immune system....the baby chicks go nuts over it!...we also put in the brooder some small pieces of wood & rocks for them to get up on and such...it keeps them entertained too!....the babies love to scratch...and they will take dust baths in the dirt......its soo cute and they get VERY excited when they find a small crawling bug from the dirt....

after about 2-4 weeks of age we started to introduce them too dried meal worms too and would bring in a tiny live worm a coupe times a week.....you don't want to fill them up on *treats* as they really need their starter feed......

we continued to bring in weeds, grass and such with root dirt ball....but once we started to give them other things to eat like the meal worms and real worms we also gave them chick grit....as they will get some grit from the soil we gave them but they will need more grit than that once they start eating more then just a little bit of treats....we also offered them dried herbs & kale broken up small too....this really helps their immune system......

once they were old enough to go out side for *visits* we would find smaller slugs and cut them in half What a Face  and offer it to the girls....once they tasted it they LOVED them.....but you need to break them open at first to let them experience the inside of a slug to want and go and eat a whole slug on their own....it only took a couple of times of cutting them open before they got it and they just went after them all on their own..... hopefully in about 18 days, we'll have baby chicks! We have one of our Golden Wyandottes setting, and a friend of ours gave us a bunch of hopefully fertile eggs! She's on the eggs and being such a good mom so far! Can't wait! The other big girls are doing their magic with our compost piles, and the compost is now on our garden getting ready for spring Smile

R&R that will be so exciting to get your own chickies!

Southern Gardener that will be fun to see what you end up with!

Gotta take pictures both of you!

Yesterday one of my friends brought over a dozen eggs of different colors.  I was like a child in a candy store, lol!  I sure miss having my own chickens and their eggs.  I was able to share some of my knowledge about how to tell how fresh eggs are with her.  Not related, but she also said she can bring rabbit poo over for me, yay!

Reading these posts has made me anxious to get more chickens, so I will be getting some chicks in the spring.  I want to get four or five and then I will have enough eggs to share with family and friends.  My grown children who have families of their own were hesitant at first to use my home grown eggs.  After they tried them, they then started asking if I had any extra.  They are not zoned to be able to have chickens.

8 more days to go!!! Do all hens "set" like this? I've only seen her off of the next once in two weeks? I'm hoping she's eating and drinking?? Man, what a devoted mommy! Hubby tried to get an egg so we could "candle" it, and she promptly pecked him! haha!

Momma hatched out 4 of the 16 eggs.  A couple didn't make it, some eggs were duds. We adopted 4 chicks that were the exact same age, and snuck them in when the others were hatching. This has been SO much fun. I have several vids on the BTE page of them.  Here she is with them all tucked in for a nap Smile
