I was able to get my hands on a number of large buckets from a friend to use in my garden. The problem is they were full of chlorine and other pool chemicals. How do I clean them out so the chemicals don't end up in my plants? Do I soak them in bleach water or soap water or something else?

Water filled and leave them to stand out inthe open for a couple fo days before re washing with clean water and leaving to dry for three days should see them OK as pool chemicals are dissolved in plain water .

+1 to plantoid's suggestion.

Plus, I'm always leery about mixing bleach with other chemicals, whether I know what I'm doing or not.

A thorough washing with soap and water should suffice. Nothing that was in there was designed to stick around after contact with water, and add in an emulsifier, and you're set. I think there's a bit of over-caution out there when it comes to this stuff. You have to have some pretty gnarly stuff to infiltrate the plastic that these buckets are made of. Their designed to keep from letting chemicals permeate, so they're pretty easy to clean up. Hell, I've got a squash plant growing happily in a bucket that used to have road-stripe paint in it.

Chlorine is bleach. Just stronger. Just wash with water and dish soap, rinse til no odor, then let air dry.
