I accidently discovered the SFG website earlier today and haven't been able to think about anything else. We live on 10 acres and I've been trying to figure out where to put my garden. I think I was dragging my feet because I could not get excited about the whole single row garden thing and all the weeds that take over. In the past the weeds have won the war. I simply did a search for how to build a raised bed for vegetable gardening and this was the first site I clicked on. This method is exactly what I've been looking for. I'm going to get everything ready for a fall garden ~ I can't wait!!

Welcome to the site.

Cop hold of a copy of the " All New Square Foot Gardening " by Mel Bartholomew 2005 edition , there is some sound advice in it about where to site the beds if at all possible and in particular about the orientation wrt the sun etc.

There is also a shed load of other useful info in the book and the methods of getting started and filling your beds .

I look forward to reading your post and viewing your pictures as you progress through the system to actually getting your crops on the table .

Welcome!!

I dreaded spring each year, for before you can plant a row garden, hoe weeds, till, plant seeds, then hoe weeds, then hoe weeds, ditto, etc I would get to July, and finally give up.

This is my 2nd year with SFG. I've cut the grocery bill at least in 1/2, and I don't even own a hoe! Our dear neighbor stole my blue hoe, good for him(didn't even bother to repaint it!)

Read the book, and ask questions. This is a friendly group of folks.

Another welcome and a big plus 1 on Plaintoid's advice to get a copy of the book. It is the how to manual for this forum. I found the book at Lowes in Oct of 2010 - sat right in the store for an hour leafing through it saying to self "I can do this." Made my first garden bed in the spring of 2011 and will never go back to inground veggie gardening again.

Definitely get the book! I found it at Menard's in December 2010 as something to read while I took my car in to be serviced. Had my first box planted in April 2011 and another 7 made by May. NEVER GOING BACK!

I agree with the others! Get the book and rock on! This is my first SFG and the method is wonderful. I've spent a grand total of about 10 minutes weeding thus far this season (I planted first on May 10). Here are a couple of pictures: Howdy from Texas Img_0011Howdy from Texas Img_0012

Howdy from Texas 396615 crgardener. Everyone posting before has said what I would have said.

Perhaps you could try making one bed and starting right now asnd get a taste of it? There is always something that could be planted; transplants perhaps? Howdy from Texas 61949

Welcome. My first year, too. The raised beds - with some right outside the sliding glass doors where we can see it - has been so much better than the rowed attempts from my past.

Welcome fellow Texan. I can tell you from living in Merkel for 9 years while being stationed at Dyess AFB that the square foot method will work great in that part of the state. The biggest thing you will have to worry about is the heat in the summer and watering as the raised beds will stay warmer then inground beds.

Howdy from Texas 396615 Glad you found the site. I stumbled across it in the same way. I had already built my SFG, but I sure wish I had found it before. I agree with getting the book. I found it at Dollar General spring 2011, but did not built and plant until this spring. Best of luck to you!
