Does anyone have recommendations for seeds that are very easy to grow and forgiving? I am in charge of putting a craft together for a VBS and we are making a hanging planter. I am looking for seeds that will be forgiving and grow after taken home by the kids. I will soak the seeds over night before planting but then they will be carried home with the kids. I was thinking about mint seeds but those are seeming difficult to find in Houston. I would like to have some flowers also but don't know what will grow easily. These will be planted in 4" and 6" terracotta pots.

Any recommendations you have are very much appreciated.

What about Asparagus Beans? They should be ok with the heat (based on what I've read..this is my first year growing them), and since they vine they may look nice as a hanging basket. And the kids can harvest a couple of beans - encouraging them to eat their veggies!

I have to second the radish recommendation - here in CA I planted a square on May 6th and started harvesting and eating them on May 24th! They grow FAST!

I too was thinking beans. You can buy a big old bag of beans at the grocery store for just a couple of bucks. The ones you don't grow, you can eat :-)

Beans, radish, sunflowers, zucchini, cucumber, or perhaps pumpkin. I would stay away from things like peanuts when dealing with kids. Very Happy

Dwarf French Marigolds ... buttons of gold so to speak .. they germinate in three days if sown on top of lightly compacted compost and thinly covered in fine grade horticultural vermiculite.. come to that most seeds that show 10 to 14 day germinations come up much earlier if done in the same manner , are kept slightly damp and above 72 oF.

I set my potted seeds in well wetted MM , use the vermiculite and stand the pots in trays with 1/2 " of water and keep topping it up every three or four days just to keep the MM at a reasonable moisture level .

Once the seeds germinate they go on to dry tables which gets mist sprayed twice a day ...once at 05.00hrs and the second at 19.00 hrs ( auto watering )

Well I ended up using zinnias, marigolds and an elf variety of sunflowers based on recommendation from my local nursery. I also had some basil and mint seeds.

I learned a valuable lesson.
NEVER SOAK BASIL SEEDS. They absorb the water and turn into a sticky glue like paste and they are next to impossible to work with.

Although it was hectic at times helping a bunch of kids plant pre soaked seeds I think they all enjoyed it. Now I am hoping that most of them will at least sprout.

thanks for your advice.
