Hello, I started a vegetable garden this spring. I started all of my plants from seed and its been an amazing experience. I live in a town home and my back yard isn't very big. I have a raised bed that measures 3'x3' and I also have a few containers. It's my first vegetable garden! I've had some bugs and caterpillars thankfully I was able to get rid off them safely. I'm very sadden that my zucchinis are only growing about 1" and they are rotting I have a total of four zucchini plants, although some zucchinis are growing well (I ate one today delicious) I'm worried about the ones that are not. My sweet fennel is next to the zucchini the tops of the fennel is starting to turn yellow. I trimmed the zucchini leaves down (not sure if its ok).

I planted my first SF Garden this year. For several years I've had a few tomatoes or cucumbers planted near the house. I never tried zucchini. I did plant two crookneck squash in the ground this year. I didn't think I had enough space in the raised bed for them. They are about 4 feet apart and one is huge, but the other is tiny. Both had blooms, but on the small one they just fell off and there is no squash. Sounds like we both have plenty to learn.

Don't we all (have much to learn). This is my first year, too. mostly eggplant - tomato - squash - zucchini - peppers. Can't wait to see how they turn out. Still weeks away from veggies.

Welcome to the forums.

Welcome!!

You'all will learn about the veggies in time.

The thing with the zucchini or other squash falling off, if it's a male bloom, it will fall off. If the bloom is a female, it will have a small baby behind it. If it gets fertilized, by bee or bug or you, then it will continue growing. If it does not get fertilized, then it will fall off! Have you seen any bees around?

I have seen quite a few bees, mostly around the peas and the flowers. Hopefully this week I'll have more time to spend at the garden. Looks like I'll have to water because we should be getting our hottest, driest weather yet.

look up "squash vine borer" in the search box top left side of this page, could be why the one is still small. Another common ailment for squash is "powery mildew".

I try and do the companion planting, and from what I have read about fennel, it should be planted with dill or off by itself. It can cause most other plants to bolt or die off. I have never planted fennel and probably won't, I tried it last summer and didn't like it. Try a search for companion planting and you will find lots of resources about it.

I planted a bee balm next to the veg. bed and it seams it has attracted a few bees.
