It's a butler's garter snake... it is not dangerous to humans. According to THIS SITE Ohio has three venomous snakes and the snake in the OP photo isn't one of them.

Post  CharlesB on 6/17/2012, 11:29 am

Good snake. I have two of them living in my Community Garden. Scare the crap out of me when I step and next to my foot I see them slither away.

They'll eat a bunch of stuff we want them to. Slugs, etc. Which my Community Garden is full of. So I am glad they come and feast on them.

Good to know CharlesB. Thanks Quiltbea. I'm going to try to train myself to be happy about it next time. And I thought I really was an outdoor girl. But I kept thinking when I went back outside it would find its way up my pant leg. Its time to pull out some super straight leg jeans.

He's more afraid of you...don't worry about the "pant leg" thing...

Talk about the circle of life.
The 3/4 acre pond next door supplies the thousands of frogs or toads whatever, where plenty find their way into my barn, also observed kingfisher birds smashing frogs on rocks and dining on them. Toads are all over the flower beds and hop up into the sf garden boxes and I have found them in my Window boxes! :afraid: I don't get that at all how do they get about
4-1/2 feet up there??? .....anyway they help eat the bugs and slugs, the snake eats the toads and slugs, etc. My barn cats have in the past dragged a dead snake up to the barn loft, for what reason I don't know. Sometimes I look outside and think not much is happening but really, its a pretty wild place out there. The birds are hawking from the fence down to the ground and back up again with their bug snacks. Haven't even talked about the preying mantis and all the other bug wars going on. Yeah, its a wild place out there. Yet, I like it as long as nothing stings or bites Me. Wink

I'm really glad I didn't see that snake when I was visiting last week, Mom lol. Remember I used to care for snakes, rats, tarantulas etc. when I worked for the science museum? Well, that seems like ages ago and apparently I've lost any sort of "de-sensitizing" when it comes to the creepy crawlies...guess I'll have to get it back if I plan on playing in the dirt here in a couple weeks!! Very Happy Don't be surprised though if you get a few panicked phone calls Razz

Ah, yes, you'll have to "get it back" uh-huh..and remember panicked phone calls are what mother's are for. I love you
How about trained rat basketball and you handling that huge lizardly thing at the museum. Gardening will be enjoyable and convenient right in the backyard.

Post  CapeCoddess on 6/18/2012, 11:50 am

I had a cat, Jasmine, that used to love to bring home little snakes and play with them. She'd throw them up in the air and chase them and toss them around. During the winter when she'd stay indoors I got this great idea to give her a strand of spaghetti. I could pick out an almost done strand and lay it on her back. She had a ball with it. And it became normal in our house to test the done-ness of the spaghetti on Jazzy's back - if it stuck, the spaghetti was done, and she got a good work out. Help!
