'Rust' on Bean leaves 03510

Need help here. All of my pink eye purple hull peas have the rust look on the underside of the leaves. I thought this was bean rust but the guy at the local nursery said it was not "rust" but he could not figure out what it was. Therefore, I took the plant to the local county extension office. They called me back and said they could not figure out what it was so they have sent it on to the University of Georgia for identification. Does anyone have any suggestions about what this disease is and how to treat it. I won't get an answer from the Univ of Ga for a few days and am worried about this spreading.

I tried to get this in a seperate topic but could not figure out how to do that. Sorry for interrupting your questions

No worries...that is sort of what my basil looked like after I used the soap and water, but the discoloration was also on top of the leaf...

I also used a soap spray for aphids on the peas. But this rust coloring is on other peas in another bed that was not sprayed with the soap spray. Also, I am almost 90% sure that I had already detected this coloring on at least one pea before I sprayed with the soap.

Here are a few links about 'Bean Rust'. Yolus, can you post a photo of the top sid eof the leaf and maybe the stem? From the photos in the links I am not sure this is your problem. Your local Extension Service Ag Agent should be able to give you a positive ID.

Thanks camprn. Still couldn't identify the problem from your links. I have a picture of the top of the leaf, but will have to get a picture of the stem later today.

There was some damage from the aphids on the leaf. Don't know if the little brown spots on the top of the leaf are from aphids or from this other disease.

I've seen a few leaves similar to the one you photographed on my peas. Not many, and this is the first time I've grown any, so I thought maybe it was nothing too bad. I planted Dixie Lee peas and put them in 5 to a square. I have 16 squares and the first ones are just about ready to pick. I'm hoping that there are enough to pick at one time for a meal. Next year I may build another box to have one just for peas.

You can see that some leaves have some holes, but we also had a pretty good hail storm a couple weeks ago. I took this picture about 4 days ago. I'm curious to hear what they tell you.

'Rust' on Bean leaves Empty Answer to "rust" on field peas

Post  yolos 6/19/2012, 9:53 am

Okay, I got my answer about the "rust" on the leaves of my pink eye purple hull peas from the University of Georgia. They said it was not a disease. It is a physical problem that should go away. They said, do not worry, pick off the affected leaves, do not fertilize, and no water on leaves.

I have noticed that the new leaves do not have the "rust" on the leaves. Hopefully everything has worked itself out. cheers

No they did not give a name to this problem. It sounded like they just knew it was not a disease therefore it must be a physical problem.
