Varmints in my carrots? Empty Varmints in my carrots?

Post  1airdoc 6/15/2012, 4:38 pm

I pulled some great looking carrots this week. Unfortunately, two of them had been eaten from the bottom tip up half-way. It looked like gnaw marks all at the base where the carrot was eaten. No evidence of an grubs or worms; the bite marks were clean.

My beds are all lined with hardware cloth and have been from the beginning, but when I was redigging the beds this spring to mix in more compost, I found what appeared to be smooth, tubular tunnels, about 2 inches in diameter, in parts of the original bed I built last year. I have re-encountered a few new tunnels on occasion.

Any idea about what this varmint is, or what I can do about it?

Sounds like voles. There have been several threads about voles.
