broccoli from seed

Post  jgiedra on 6/10/2012, 10:42 pm

I have tried twice now (last year and this year) to start broccoli from seed, and it never seems to grow. I get a few sprouts, somewhat leggy even though the grow lights are low, then after a few weeks they just shrivel up and die.

I have had great success growing many other things from seed, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here...anyone else have this problem? Or any advice? I would like to get it sorted out before I start all my fall crops...

Thanks!
John

Sorry I'm not much use to you as I've never started seed indoors, I don't have issues with frosts so I planted mine direct in the garden and haven't had a problem so far, mind you the first one I planted is getting very tall but still hasn't formed a head.

I'm wondering what you started them in, was it straight vermiculite or MM, I'm thinking that if you used straight vermiculite then you would need to transplant them fairly quickly as there is no nutrients in there.

Hopefully someone with more experience will come along soon and help you out!

Had that problem with most brassicas until someone said to replant them when they are approaching 1 1/2” of growth above the soil line. I set them deeper about half or a little more of that new growth into the new potting soil and things turn out pretty well usually. Using a bigger container for the transplant is a plus also.
